Silentdarkness1 Attempts to become good at Don't Starve

Recommended Posts

Okay, so i've been doing a Maxwell Playthrough. Day 60 as I write this. Doing alright, I guess. I finally found a Ruins Sinkhole, but it's surrounded by Spiders on all side. No Snurtles or Slurtles, but there was some bunnymen.

Actually, the cave level that genned for me was VERY VERY sparse on spiders. Which is both good news....and creepy as heck. The only major spider areas was around the hole to the ruins. Is that natural?

Also, found a camp in the ruins that had a chest with a Snurtle Helmet and some snurtle slime as well.....what's that stuff good for, exactly?

Snurtle slime = gunpowder

If you want to get rid of the spiders try this:  make a few traps, and put them down between the nest and an open area.  Run on the web to alert the spiders, and get them to chase you.  Run through the traps, the spiders will follow and get trapped.  Run to the now empty spider nest and take your pick to it.  Repeat as needed.  This won't alert all the spiders in the area like normal fighting might, and you still get the web/sacs.  I usually find at least some spiders around the ruins entrance.

Is there webbing in the camp?

Not a bit.

I'm low on silk, so i'm tempted to farm this crap for a while.....but first I suppose I should build up the bunnymen....right? To make it not a chore.

Also, the cave stale component reference appears to be fixed.

FTFY.

Bah. Work smart not hard.  If you attack the spiders too close to the nest theres a good chance that all the other spiders will wake up and come running.  Doesn't matter how boss you are when you're stun locked.

Bringing bunnies or lobsters in can cause the same thing.  They will go running in after the spiders, onto the webs, and wake up all the other spiders.  And then when they get hurt they run/turtle and you're left by yourself.

Too many spiders bad.

That is working smart. After that, back off, wait for all the spiders to head back inside, and scout in with walking cane to pick up the goods. Don't care too much about meat. I'm good for foodz.

And I severely doubt rock lobsters will die from the cave spiders.

There are very few rock lobsters. They breed though, so perhaps I just need to wait.

You just need some to distract the spiders. Then you can finish them one by one while the rest of them is focused on hitting the Rock Lobster. They have 95% damage resistance and they regenerate health over time so they will last a long time.

Also if you have some gunpowder you can do this :

I think I need more preparation before I can tackle this though. Back to the surface.

Here's the map so far. My current setup is in the middle.

There's a giant section of rocky area with no turf to the west, but all the rock-based materials I need. I've also cleared out the Teleportato Marble Biome. Nothing surrounding it, surprisingly. The red circle shows how I got there with a wormhole. The savannas to the east have a slowly growing pair of beefalo herds. There also used to be a pig grass farm that I cleared the torches from. Before THEY burned it down with lightning!

Also, I have a simple spider farm to the north of my base.

But here's the current objective now. Way down at the southeast is the PERFECT place to set up a base....unfortunately...

Maxwell: Not the bees!

What do I do here? I have 24 gunpowder btw. Should I just smash it all, or grow my honey farm to OP levels? Or perhaps use a combination of Shadows and pigmen?

Anything that involves combat is working hard rather than smart.

They won't, that's the point.  They might tie up a bunch of them so you can kill them one by one, but I've had that backfire when the whole group of spiders suddenly turned on me.  If you want them gone you have to bust up their nests.  And it's not like there aren't piles of spiders to farm elsewhere.

Not neccessarily. And, you are aware of maxwell's preferred playstyle, right?

EDIT: Bwahahahaha! I just trailed down the first winter koalefant. Tracked him down right to my base.....lol.

I haven't played him since he got the book, so I'm going to say no.

Here's a hint. It doesn't rely heavily on doing the fighting yourself. Maxwell's health is so low, you really want to have others do the fighting for you if possible. Even more so if you use a meat effigy. Hence the point of the Codex Umbra. Nightmare Fuel=shadows that fight for you.

Then it sounds like using the method I suggested with the traps and the not fighting would work pretty well with him.

Again, i'm not sure if I want to do that. I'd rather farm some if possible at all. Won't have to worry about the spider queen that way. And rocks are plentiful, so Rock Zoidberg.

He's called The Puppet Master for a reason.

If you don't care about their drops just plant a lureplant and let the bees follow you to their doom. Then just trash their hive.

Well, it doesn't stop you from farming them.  Just don't bust up the nests after you catch the spiders.  The OP was asking about taking care of a bunch of spider nests near his ruins entrance, and since I just had to deal with this I just posted what I did.

I had a few spider nests set up in a little cul de sac once, with a huge number of traps right in front of them.  I used poke the nest and run through them trapping all the spiders and getting me all web I needed.

OOH. +1 for excellent idea. I have a bunch of lureplants. They always spawn RIGHT next to my stuff. In plain view. XD

@hotflungwok i'm doing that for my surface nests. The surface, where I now am.

EDIT: Wait, that isn't gonna work until summer! Damnit!

I went down into the ruins finally, and after running into lots of nightmares and splumonkeys(and nightmare splumonkeys), a cavein mysteriously killed me. For no reason. I think somehow, I caught on fire, then exploded, then died after being hit by a rock (I had all my gunpowder with me, but it never left my inventory until I died)

And then the game locked up. yaaaay.

This sounds mysterious...but also...besides of the tragedy...that was not a boring way of dying...at least....
