mrwednesday
Hi all, I've played 63 hours, still consider myself maybe an advanced novice. I'm getting to the point where I develop a pretty good beginning camp and make it through at least one winter. Have some farms, crock pots, bee boxes, etc., and a few good items here and there, but I am feeling like I don't have a lot of direction. I want to eventually get down into the mines, but I'd like some general advice on what direction people tend to go after they've set up their initial base camp...setting up silk farms, meat farms, etc., sounds interesting, but it's just more farming...I want some direction to keep the game more interesting. Anyone like to post what their general strategy is following the first winter and having already established a pretty good base camp? KevMaaan
I usually just try to expand my base further., hunt some McTusks the next winter, go for deerclops kills, explore caves/ruins, go for adventure mode etc etc. If you are looking for some mid-late game tips there are a few streamers you can watch who all use different characters and do different things: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/superjonm/discussions/0/846964363959133797/ Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/27767-early-mid-game-tips/#findComment-321521 Share on other sites
xSadoro
What I do (and my camps always suck and are small and lame, but they all contain, 1 birdcage, 1 farm, 1 ice box, 1 crock pot, etc etc) Is going for the magic tab, I like to rush it , idk why. zazori
Go to the caves, demolish 2 bunny hutches and come back to the surface.Build one bunny hutch and surrond it with tooth traps.Build a dragonfruit farm in the caves meanwhile.Spelunk during winter, kill some bunnymen and when you come back to the surface you should have enough for building a spider farm. You've already gotten past that if you survived winter and can't think of much to do. You are now in the late game, Survival is no longer an issue and you now need something to do with your time. You have two choices at this point, Build, or Explore. If you choose to Build, look to this thread for some inspiration. Basically what you are going to do is turn your camp into some kind of art. If you choose to Explore, you will be heading into the caves and eventually ruins, I recommend trying to clear them out completely. Cynical Cynicist
I personally have a village somewhat near my base, consisting of approximately 15 Pig Houses and 15 Rabbit Hutches (I still plan on expanding it). It's extremely useful. Hounds? Run to the village - during the day Pigs will be on guard, during the dusk and night Bunnymen rule. Spiders? Farm them by placing a den near the village. If a Pig happens to become a Werepig, just keep kiting it and farm its pigtail/meat. Treeguard? Village. I have over 20 living logs and haven't layed a finger on a Treeguard. Deerclops? I haven't actually tested this yet. Spider Queens? I'm going to see what happens when the current nest becomes one (she will almost certainly be destroyed). Anelyn
My advice to you for early-mid game is to learn to prioritize your needs. It's very easy to get lost picking every single grass / twig / berry you run into and return to base with 0 logs despite you were setting off to chop 100 logs The addictive nature of picking everything usable can easily get in the way of your objectives, resulting in a setback - time is important due to day-night cycle, as well as seasons. If you can't finish bee houses in time and provide them with plenty of nearby flowers so they have time to make you honey before first snow falls, you just wasted time and resources for something that won't pay off. Always have a chest with basic resources for your survival needs (1 weapon, 1 armor piece, couple grass / twigs / flint / logs / coal / 1 light source / 1 heat stone / 1 winter clothing) which you simply do not use until situation arrives (ie: you wake up at end of winter and deerclops is going berserk in your main base, he smashed your chests with weapons, armor etc, and you need to deal with the problem). Acet
I personally just avoid creating large static setups to farm things like spiderwebs or MacTusk drops. Even in the things I do kind of farm (using actual farms and putting traps next to bunny holes) I keep it small. In a similar way I don't build an enormous, complicated setup to make sure I can survive hound attacks. In the late game I either live in the Caves or have an area with a bunch of tooth traps near my base to were I run in panic and which still has an element of danger (there are usually not enough traps for all hounds). The point being that in order for the game to remain fun, there has to be some element of risk and some varied non-repetitive activities. Spending your days doing repetitive maintenance activities like collecting spiderweb drops from one's farm is no fun. Much better to leave some things to randomess and, for example, try and control the spiders yourself by hand, with the occasional surprise like coming to your usual spider playground to find 3 spiderqueens. Similarly, it's a lot more fun exploring and getting into fights than collecting the materials to create a huge base. When you've exhausted all the fun from exploring outside, try living in the Caves full time. When you exhausted that, try fully exploring the Ruins. When you've exhausted that, try Adventure mode or going through the Teleportato to a new world or changing the world generation settings or even coming up with a whole new gameplaying strategy (rellying in different food sources or even putting your main base in an uncommon place such as a swamp). If they have this many tooth traps from that number of hound attacks, they are beyond mid-game. Most even after their first winter seem to only have a few teeth from attacks (as the videos have shown,) mostly getting only monster meat from them and spending what they got on Sewing kits for Top Hats until they get their Tam 'O Shanter. And many new first winter players are Turtling, not exploring for Mac Tusk if not close by. By late game (when we're up to five+ hounds) it's much more feasible they have the tooth trap as in just before their second winter to just after their second winter (or after day 75+.) If not done by then, by days 100+ they can finally get enough teeth to make this easily doable (but not before and not for non-advanced players.) But lets not go too far in the other direction either for those intermediate players. For example: Sound's like early-mid game tips aren't what you want. You've already gotten past that if you survived winter and can't think of much to do. You are now in the late game, Survival is no longer an issue and you now need something to do with your time. Actually, the hardest thing for intermediate players is after surviving their first winter, then learning to prepare for their next winter forgetting to do so and properly track the 21 days starting from day 37. Many an intermediate player has died on their second winter from this problem planning. Late game players are often the ones who can survive their third+ winter easily and/or are past day 130+ and/or have made a Shadow manipulator (if they can successfully get those components they are beginning to enter advanced abilities in resource gathering) as well as know how to handle frequent multiple hound attacks. By then, they are likely ready to try and learn living in the caves long term if they (also) wish. the truthseeker
Who talked about making a toothtrap field. With three lined up is enough.Sometimes even after my first winter, I am lucky to get one or two teeth. I have seen three other streams where this was true. [Now mind you, I'm not talking about my more-often-than-not new games' horrible luck (always get gobblers almost every day from picking three to five berry bushes and takes until the fifth hound wave before I get teeth if I don't go after set-pieces found if lucky enough to find them and specialty hounds/teeth in the set-pieces.) The game just hates me more than others to be fair when I start ] Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/27767-early-mid-game-tips/#findComment-324953 Share on other sites
