Yeah, raising tallbirds is great! They're so cute!

Now I don't want to get on the wrong end of the world's only official tallbirdologist so I'd like to reiterate that I think they're extremely cool and thematic. For pure gameplay benefit, which is the question at hand, it's a long walk for a short drink of water.

Did you know catcoons have a friendship system? I didn’t know catcoons have a friendship system until literally last night.

Surprising seeds.

Waiting until day 150, or you are arbitrarily going to find less, is the final nail in the coffin. And that's on top of everything else in the process. My second favorite part is the time spent disposing of garbage like broken shells and golden picks.

I’ve been playing in a much slower-paced world recently and I’ve really appreciated the few sprout rocks I have. They’re a really nice passive source of gems once you get them set up. I do agree I don’t see the point in gloomthorns though. All of this time just for a better glowberry? No thanks, I’m just going to stick with my miner hat and lantern.

yes! playing catcoon slots is a way to get seeds in a lightsout world~

Off the top of my head;

Bath bombs: hot springs are simply way too far away to be convenient to farm, and the only real reason you'd want to farm moon glass is to make glass cutters/axes, but you already get tons just from mining all the glass boulders on the lunar island.

Stone fruit: they're very good yes, however bull kelp is just as good if not better since they don't require mining, can be stacked infinitely in a single spot to save tons of time on harvesting (and even more time when you get the shadow scythe), and they don't require fertilizing or rare seed drops.

Lunar trees: needing bug nets to replant trees outweighs the extra logs you get, especially since palmcone trees not only give useful palmcone scales, but also only give 1 less log when fully grown.  They're very pretty and make for great decorations however.

Repairing clockworks: cool idea on paper but friendly fire from rooks makes giant clockwork armies less appealing, and that's not even considering the fact that I'm pretty sure they lose loyalty to you when you leave the server/caves.

Raising tallbirds: this takes waaaay too long to be worth doing, regardless of your stage of the game, it's pretty much only done as a challenge or when you've run out of things to do in a world. While a tallbird nest is a decent source of food, it's just not worth the 30 or so days you have to spend babysitting the smallbird and teenbird, especially when you consider the fact that you are going to get raided by hounds and maybe even deerclops/bearger during the process. Plus you need a decent amount of food to actually keep the things alive, food that you could eat yourself while you use those 30 days to do actually productive things.

Barnacle farms: there are some pretty good recipes involving barnacles. Barnacle nigiri are essentially perogies that give 10 extra sanity and can be made with twigs used for filler, and barnacle linguine is a sort of side grade to dragonpie, restoring 10 less hp in exchange for 15 more sanity and also its ingredients being able to be farmed year round. The issue is that seaweeds kinda suck if you accidentally aggro one and can't stunlock it, and only being able to plant starter kits on sea stacks makes barnacles really unappealing to farm. If we got the ability to make our own sea stacks, barnacles could easily become a very good food source.

Critters: pets are fun, but the hunger system ruins them. If they actually provided perks like the moth pet did, then the hunger system would make sense. While I would like for each critter to get it's own small perk, I mainly just want the annoying hunger noises to go away.

this thread is great because it is revealing of the distinct playstyles everyone has. everyone thinks different things are or arent worth it. few mechanics here haven't been refuted with someone saying "i actually like doing this"

Personally, I feel like berry bush farms and pig taming are notably weak systems with pretty much no incentive to engage with, even for new players, and the belt of hunger is a cool concept but due to how many hoops you have to go through to get one and how it takes up the backpack slot, I never really see a reason to use it.

Berry bush farms, pig taming and belt of hunger are great mechanics for Walter players!

Woby forager skill doubles amount of berries and with his portable campfire he can cook them anytime further increasing hunger values, or can use them in crockpot to make more trail mix which as Walter's fav food gets a pretty useful hunger boost making trail mix a decent all round dish now.

Walter can shoot birds anytime which means infinite meat to tame pigs, people forget that 6-8 pigs can absolutely annihilate forests to the point that it rivals wood-chopper characters like woodie/maxwell/wurt. Pigs are free dps boosts for fights like dfly if you make a wall box instead of a straight line, also since walter is better with body armours like logsuits you can freely craft football helmets for your pigs. Pioneer's Panache/twine twirler/field medic makes using hambat/log suit combo for Walter viable, this with a pig army makes first autumn dfly kill very easy.

Walter is the single best character for ditching your backpack to use body clothing items like belt of hunger due to wobys extra inventory being more than enough to compensate.

Mechanics like these being more viable for certain characters over others is a positive thing. And if you feel like a certain mechanic is weak, try using it with another character.. especially Walter as he is the king of niche mechanics, e.g. snurtle armour is op with Walter.
