Just one. That's all they need.

The main issue with WX is that despite having all these cool circuits, you really can't justify using many of them because they take up too many slots compared to how much value they provide, especially compared to speed. If WX got just one extra circuit slot however, suddenly the amount of variety in their circuit loadouts goes way up, without making the "meta" builds that much better.

With one extra slot, you'd now be able to run 3/2/2 and 3/4 builds, with each number representing how many circuits slots each circuit takes up. For instance, with the 3/2/2, you'd now be able to run 2 speed circuits and the illumination circuit if you'd prefer to give up night vision in exchange for extra speed, or you could go with a pretty strong tank build with a beanbooster and 2 super hardy circuits. For the 3/4, you'd now be able to run night vision and a heating/cooling circuit, making day to day exploration and survival a breeze.

Meanwhile, the 3 speed and speed + night vision circuits would only benefit from minor stat increases, nothing game breaking, especially considering the shenanigans some of the characters are able to get up to nowadays. Plus this would probably help when their skill tree inevitably ends up adding new circuits, though I'm sure new circuit slots will be added then too. I don't really care how WX gets new circuit slots as long as they get them at some point, as I think it'd make them more fun and interesting to play.

I honestly think that the uncompromising mode did a really good job at reworking this system, it just makes so much more sense they way it is there - meaning that there's 8 circuit slots and they drain power and durability so you actually have to think about them, not just plug in and forget for the rest of the game

I'm not opposed to extra node as a late-game upgrade, but I think something like Hollow Knight's Overcharmed mechanic would be much more fun and kinda fit the character. Essentially, you could brute-force circuit that goes beyond the maximum number of nodes in exchange for some negative effect, in case of Hollow Kinght it's taking a double dmg, but of course it could be something that translates better to the DST mechanics, like constant energy loss, increased hunger rate, negative sanity aura, stuff like that.

I agree, i think it should make water an actual threat to them. Doing double or triple damage depending on how many extra circuits slots youre undertaking. Being potentially momentarilly stunned when hit (short circuit) and having an extra passive hunger drain (energy leak).

I feel this would make it a small threat to play like this against something like bosses but not too annoying for everyday use..

Additionally you should need skill points to allow them to work at full power (reroute power from his compliance subroutine), or certain overcharged modules only working at specific teirs. They could alternatively make the skills lower the downsides of the extra slots. Honestly theres a lot they can do with it.

How are all of these ideas better than what we got?

Overcharmged is a cool mechanic concept, having an extra slot would indeed help with variety, and then there's the thing discussed in the other WX thread about the slow recharge discouraging circuit-swapping being a mistake.

I say we give WX one extra notch for circuits, do short circuit-themed downsides if you go over the maximum, and give us the option to eat electrical doodads to recharge faster. Then WX's circuit gimmick becomes actually cool, and the skill tree can be mostly about adding new circuits that do more than stat changes.

this could work

I actually suggested a mechanic just like this a few years ago! My idea was that it would be associated with the lunar affinity perk. Really cool to see that someone else had the same idea.

I think the issue with his circuits isn't that he's 1 capacity away from being able to use 2 speed and 1 light, the issue is that the circuits are really boring and most of them suck. As you said minor stat increases don't matter and don't do anything, so all WX has become is someone who passively does some combination of moving faster, ignoring the mechanic of darkness, or ignoring the mechanic of temperature.

Why do they limit WX-78 to only the circuit feature?

Wagstaff is right about one thing: The best thing about humans is only their ability to think, and that's the highest value of us. Despite this, his choice to make WX-78 a synth is questionable, flawed even. Why did he transfer the human mind into an anatomically inferior vessel? The humanoid physicality will always lack features to aid in the investigation of the unknown. Therefore, just as I suspected, WX-78 needs upgraded body parts, especially GIANT HANDS. And I am not talking about a pair, but 8 of them. Folks, imagine what those EIGHT GIANT HANDS could achieve!
