Hey guys, I was scrolling through twitter when I saw the announcement that Klei designed a pickaxe skin for people who follow the Kickstarter boardgame project. Can someone tell me how do I get it? I've never used kickstarter before, so I'm really confused. Do I have to pay something for it?

No idea. The written communication says it's just for following the Kickstarter campaign (or the creator?), but they recently said at a presentation that it's tied to backing, i.e. paying for, the board game. Link to the presentation, relevant part at 24:49. Emphasis mine:

We just wanted to tell you that we have this free follow gift. We call it "Constant Curiosities". It's going to be, basically, a growing bow of freebies that all of you will get once you follow the campaign and back for at least the core box.

They might've misspoken, though. Clarification on how it works would be indeed nice.

Yeah, I don't even see an option to back the project, only to save it.

I didn't back the project before because I'm from Brazil so I knew that shipping costs would be way too high and it probably won't have a translation to portuguese, but if I knew that we would be getting skins for it I lowkey would've backed depending on the price :wilson_cry:

think they mean what Kickstarter calls "save" when they say "follow". Kickstarter allows users to "follow" the creators, hover over or click on the creator's avatar icon (not the name) to see the option:

Thank you, I didn't knew about this! I followed them too just in case.

Welp, they've answered in the comments of the Kickstarter post that it's for following the project ("save" or "notify me on launch") and only for backers, so it's not free. @JoeW are you guys ok with this type of promotion? I was already following the project, but this kind of stuff is off putting.

Pinned comment in the Kickstarter update:

Everyone who clicked “Notify me on launch” and backed the campaign after launch will receive a FREE Follow Gift: the Constant Curiosities mini expansion.

This expansion includes the Pick/Axe skin.

The redeem code for the skin will be included inside the expansion box once the game is produced.

More details to follow :-)

So "follow now to get a free gift" actually means "follow now and pay next month to get a digital code per mail in 2027".

They made the skin for it. Whats wrong with having an extra incentive to buy the board game?

If we got the pickaxe for free by justt following, it wouldnt be that good for the campaign to have ghost numbers.

Though the delay is kinda dumb for the skin.

I don't have a problem with it being a reward for backers, but I very much do have a problem with them saying "follow now to get a free gift!" when that is not in fact what is happening. Deceptive marketing like that drives me up the wall.

Nothing wrong with incentives. There are two issues here: there is no indication anywhere, other than in a couple of comments, that it's tied to a purchase, and if it's tied to a purchase it's not free.

Stuff is given away for free to drive interest for something all the time.

Be honest, most people would get the skin then forget about the board game.

Though the title is misleading which is very bad.

I followed this board game project a while ago when it was just announced and was really looking forward to it. But the recent DST updates and the direction Klei took with the game, as well as their ignorance towards player feedback made me reconsider this potential purchase. I made a decision to never spend money on any of their products or in-game offers anymore. Such a shame, it would have been nice to have this board game and I'd otherwise gladly backed the project.

Are you arguing that giving stuff away is not a viable marketing strategy?

Funny phrasing, considering the topic.

Especially with a dst board game it wouldnt be the best way because board games are niche nowadays, and a dst themed one would be even nicher and they want to try incentisise people to try it.

how would dontstarve as a board game even work? they need to show me a play demostration because in my eyes: dontstarve cannot work as a board game

Dont Starve definitely can work as a board game

Me and my gf had a ton of fun playing Stardew Valley boardgame adaptation, and the concepts they showed on how the Dont Starve boardgame works look promising

We are 100% buying it, but can anyone confirm we can get the pickaxe skin by buying the boardgame normally?

They have an AMA on reddit and I asked there, maybe they reply
