1. Would playing with known friends be safe?
2. Could a known person you play with be the carrier of the virus (without them knowing), and infect others?

I'm most certainly not gonna play until this is sorted, or I get more information on how to deal with the issue.

I have like 100 mods downloaded, many of the popular ones and many obscure ones and even a few random Chinese ones. I play strictly solo, intentionally barring my servers off from any joiners(and sometimes simply play offline) and my skins have been safe. Unless there is some random esoteric mod that is triggering it that I don't have I think it's safe to say this issue is happening by pugging.

Honestly I would assume they are doing something to the function that allows you to download a servers mods when joining. I'm not a programmer but is it possible to sabatogue that?

I have encountered the same issue, please resolve this vulnerability as soon as possible.

The most recent patch should prevent this from happening to more people at least:  "Fixed some security issues with the skin API."
