I feel like he should do a little more sometimes than just trade.

 

Maybe sometimes he will shear beefalo herds.

Maybe you can pay him for a map that reveals areas he has wandered.

Maybe he can have a way to give you quests for quick rewards.

maybe he could watch your beefalo for you and keep it safe for a price if you give him the bell.

Big fan of this one. Maybe if the beefalo you give him isn't fully domesticated yet, he'll slowly help with taming it too? Like a salt lick that actually makes the domestication go slightly upwards, rather than strictly preventing it from going down. Maybe the trade-off is that he chooses to train whatever tendency he likes rather than the one you're trying to get.

In Klei's promotional animation, I saw that he would pick up the Warbler and take it away, which may mean that he will be interested in some "valuable things". I would rather hope that he will have the ability to purchase items, just like a pawnshop, so that I don't have to throw my extra items (such as Bone Armor, Shadow Thurible, Tentacle Spike, Magiluminescence, etc. that I got in the Ruins battle) into the Scaled Furnace for nothing.

Kinda wish Wandering Trader would sell items that aren't basic resources and he would actually trade with the player - instead of using ash and pig skin as a payment. Might be really busted, but I wish he'd sell gear like weapons, armor, with a low chance of having one very rare piece like ruins/magic/lunar tier item. Think that would be a neat way to show new players that items like that are in the world somewhere for them to discover.
