Console/Controller wortox teleportation... Sucks, a LOT.

I've been playing console don't starve together for more than over half a decade, and while I had (have) my gripes with it, such as a lower effective skill cealing and skill expression aswell as just a general feeling of tediousness, the controls were all in all usable and enough, even though that with skill and more experience it grew less and less desirable. Wortox always had the issue of teleportations on controller, and while this was annoying whenever I played him it, again, was enough, even though It was a frustrating user experience to know I'm at a disadvantage and get less value for not owning a type of platform. 

But revisiting wortox made me realize how much more exaggerated this issue is with the skill tree. Soul warps in general already get marginally less distance, soul echos and the new additions soul echo even more so as it adds up, and BOTH of the affinities are hellish to utilize. And the two affinities looked so incredibly cool to utilize for me, it gave me a ton of motivation to get on and tweak my skill tree, but it just does NOT mash on controller. Having to utilize a teleport that forcefully sets you to a point halfway through the edge of you screen is very unfun, as there's no control to it. It also loses out majorly on dps, forces players to walk back to whatever they were doing and makes some icky situations in multiplayer with troublesome aggro. 

My proposition is maybe something like, a double tap to teleport on your current position (lets you use the teleports offensively and aggressively, and to utilize the affinities) and holding circle to make it move away from you and zoom the camera out, so you can get same value as pc does (this could also be used outside of wortox's features so we can also use the camera to it's full extent) 

I'm VERY much spitballing here but please, please please please... Take a second to look at the controller controls, at the VERY least for wortox's teleports

As a person who plays with a controller on PC a lot... Yeah, it does suck, doesn't help that a lot of inputs are also the same inputs for other actions too. I circumvent this issue by using the mod 'Extra Controller Features', which lets me alter the distance of the soul hop via holding down one of the analog sticks and pressing the triggers to increase/decrease the range... But that mod only does so much with what little input control we do have.

 

For Example; The Knapsack has the same 'knab' input as Soul Hop, this has caused A LOT of moments where I want to soul hop, but a misplaced item or a random seed drop has caused me to instead move towards the item and prevent me from soul hopping.

 

This problem is exasperated even more for pure Console gamers, since they don't have access to modding, restricting them to fix hop distances as well as other issues with controller.

I feel Klei need to really rethink and redraw controller input so both Controller and Keyboard/Mouse have a more equal footing.

yeah walter targeting has been irking me

Just out of curiosity what would a reasonable LAZY fix for klei in regards to Wortox soul hop on console be? 

 

Like I understand having expectations like them completely overhauling his soul hop would be ideal 

 

But what wound a simple fix for console players be? 

 

On consoles only, giving Wortox a 3rd free hop? Making up for the poor distance etc?

I don’t want to be “that jerk” but Klei devs all need to play Smite on an Xbox. Out of the 90+ playable characters I’m sure they’ll find a move set that makes the characters of DST do what the Klei devs intend for them to do, but do those things feeling far more comfortable and natural on a game controller.

They do not even have to play competitive matches, they can simply pick a god, go to the training ground and observe how abilities are cast and work. Etc..

I haven’t played smite since my little brother went to prison back in 2019, but I fondly remember really enjoying how good character abilities felt using a controller.

I do not get that same joy from DST, and several characters could really use controller tweaks.

Wortoxs Soul Hop, the Ability to interact with a Lantern, And his Nabsack probably shouldn’t all overlap one another.

I saw somewhere on here the idea of pressing R3 down to change from scrolling the inventory to instead controlling the teleport cursor and then pressing R3 again to swap back to the inventory scroll. i think this is a decent fix

I think a super simple solution for wortox soul hops would be to have the soul hop range increase the more you hold down the button to teleport, and double tap to teleport in the same place. 

Also it'd be super convinient if soul jars interacted like chests, where you can press left dpad to quickly put them inside or take them out. Currently you gotta open the jar, go over to the souls, use the right trigger, press on the souls, manually drag them to the jar, press X (to actually put it in the jar) and then right trigger again. 

Willow also sucks majorly with how you need to suck up embers... Whole other can of worms. 

Also no shade to Mike ofc but the smite thing sounds like just a general good game-feel design, I didn't play smite a lot but it seems very fundamentally different in the control scheme as it's a MOBA with 4 abilities and consumables.

Alternatively, if they can not bring console version DST up to par with PC Version, they should Nerf the PC version so it’s on the same level of usability as Console.

And no I’m not trying to be a troll when saying this, and it would not be the first time that a PC game had to be Nerfed to be fair to console players….

In fact: If Klei is serious about their pipeline dream being Cross-Platform DST, then they may have to nerf both PC AND Console version so that they’re all on equal playing fields with the upcoming MOBILE Version.

But all of this is of course: if they plan to green light crossplay.

Console players are already paying more for an inferior product by buying the console, you guys should be used to this already.

Stating the obvious a pc cost more than a console 

But typically you can get DST cheaper on pc than console. 

But right now the console version is the worst way to play, especially if you like Wortrox. 

 

Most of the videos of how to use his affinity skills  are things ou literally can't do on console

Sure but unless you're talking a ps5 pro (which imo a gimmick that virtually nobody buys ) it would be incredibly difficult to get a new pc for under 400 (the frequent sale price of an xsx or ps5)

Are thee any videos on how to play Wortox at a high level with the new skill trees on console? 

All the videos are pc gamers, and as mentioned many times they're just things you literally can't do with a controller

All the videos are pc gamers, and as mentioned many times they're just things you literally can't do with a controller 

There's benefits to console too, a big couch and TV are way more comfortable.

The console release feels like a sellout when they cash the check for the sales, but fail to make a comparable product.

Most game devs are competent enough to make something similar enough, excluding fps titles. The controls for wortox should have been fixed years ago.

While we're here, I'll also say this game struggles so much with multiplayer. The lag I get from this game is worse than other titles with a much heavier load. Kind of a failure when the game is designed around the multiplayer components.

Couches and televisions are not part of consoles.

Clearly those other games have a much lighter load if they're running better, lol. The game runs poorly because when you host the game you're running two servers. Consoles are about as powerful as a laptop a decade out of date, so they struggle to do that. 

I saw a comment from a developer in February stating 

 

Controller changes will have to be something later after this release.

 does that mean it's a thing that's actually happening? Or was this just a devs way of politely saying we're not working on it right now, but if we did it would be in the future? 

It's vague enough that I think you could interpret it either way

They should make it playable on 3DS and nerf it all back for that because I love my 3DS and I love my frens so i want to play it with tem and i want to play on my 3DS
