Voice of Chinese Players - Phase 1

(Translation of Gu Guji's comments on the second version of Wendy's Skill Tree video on Bilibili)

Given that quite a number of users on the forum believe that only a very small number of Chinese Wendy players have objections to Wendy's skill tree in the game "Don't Starve Together", I'm making this post to express our own voices (instead of letting others speak up for us based on their imagination).

Notice before viewing

Bilibili (English name: bilibili, abbreviated as "B Station") is a cultural community and long-form video platform in mainland China that focuses on animation and games, and its main users are young people.

Gu Guji: A video creator of "Don't Starve Together", with 144,000 followers (regarded as one of the most popular video creators in the "Don't Starve" community on Bilibili).

Here is the link to the video:

"Full Analysis of Wendy's Skill Tree Update 2 - Don't Starve Together" - Bilibili https://b23.tv/vUomd5Y. This video has 113,000 views and 1,000 comments.

The video related to the first version update of Wendy's skill tree has 195,000 views and 1,300 comments.

Due to the complexity of the Chinese language, I can't guarantee that I can perfectly convey the meaning of the original comments. However, I promise to treat every comment fairly (regardless of how they evaluate Wendy's skill tree), and I will delete insulting words and irrelevant comments.

I plan to select the top 100 comments ranked by the number of likes from the comment section (not in chronological order, but by popularity), and each comment has received at least one like.

After the translation, I will attach screenshots of the original comments (without usernames). (If you don't trust me, you can translate them by yourself.) And I will send them in groups of 20 comments (to reduce the number of my posts).

如果你是中国玩家,请不要在这个帖子下随意攻击他人,无论别人说了什么。另外,我希望你能帮我解答一些他们关于这些评论提出的问题,因为我个人发帖的数量是有限制的。
P.S.
Due to different habits, we use different names for the game characters compared to you, so there may be some mistakes when translating. Here are some translation comparisons:
Valkyrie - Wigfried
Female Worker - Verona
Fire Girl - Willow
Vegetative State - Wormwood

The problem with Wendy's skill tree is not about whether it's strong or not, but rather that it lacks originality. Now whenever I see a skill tree, I'll compare it with that of the Female Worker to see if it has half as much creativity as hers.    106 likes

Hahaha. The skill trees of other characters are more or less useful, but for Wendy's, it's really hard to feel what its application scenarios are.    14likes

I really don't understand why they are reluctant to make some potions to protect Abigail. Whether it's adding an invincibility effect, increasing the maximum health points, or enhancing the defense, anything would be okay. It can be said that almost all the current problems lie in the fact that Abigail can die suddenly. As long as Abigail isn't so prone to dying suddenly, all the other problems will be much easier to solve. They even specifically made a potion that can restore Abigail to level three, but they are unwilling to make a potion to protect her.
I really don't understand where the designers' skills are reflected. Do they not know this core problem or just don't want to solve it? Even if the production cost was a bit higher and the duration was shorter, it would be all right, but they just won't make it. Moreover, the effect of increasing the maximum health points is just fake health, and it has to be bound to the urn and wait for about several days.
Who can help me analyze what this means?  104likes

All Wendy players know that the first step when fighting a boss is to recall her sister.  42likes

To be honest, this designer named Jason has done live broadcasts before, and he has a lot of understandings about the game that are hard for us ordinary players to comprehend. [Expression of skepticism]
The fourth picture is the most unacceptable. For the sake of usability and a low threshold, the design depth has been sacrificed.   74likes

The first three points are reasonable and there's nothing wrong with them. However, the last one is really shocking. There are too many naturally spawned Shadow Creatures in this game, and those caused by low Sanity actually account for a rather small proportion instead.       21likes

The mechanism doesn't seem interesting. It was refreshing when Willow's mechanism was just released. The official team doesn't seem to want to make changes. Looking at the chaotic community, I originally planned to start a new game save after Wendy's version was updated, but now I'm just too tired to do so.        6likes

I don't understand the significance of 1200 health points. If it can't be recovered, does that mean having to frequently go back home and be idle? In the current updated version, although the health point limit is 1200 and can be recovered with potions, it's still not good enough. It would be okay if it could recover naturally up to 1200. We can't let Wendy build urns wherever she goes, right?       74likes

Klei believes that 1200 health points is too powerful and comes with a cost. Although changing it to a health point cap is indeed quite powerful.    14likes

If being able to lead the sister to fight bosses can be considered a successful design, then the biggest pain point of playing as Wendy is that she can't fight bosses but can only clear small monsters. I don't even dare to summon the sister to fight against the Damaged Bishops and Clockwork Rooks underground.       18likes

(it could also be Damaged Bishop and Ancient Guardian here, I'm not sure after all, they can both be called rhinoceroses, but I prefer the former)

The pet system is rather useless. It feels like there's plenty of room for improvement on it.

When the beefalo was given to the Valkyrie, so many people were shocked.

It's exactly the kind of skill tree that Wendy could have had.        79likes

I think people were shocked because there was no mention at all in the Valkyrie's character setting that she could tame beefalos. A character's skills should be in line with the character's setting rather than judged by the actual in-game performance.   45likes

2000+hour veteran players are not very satisfied with the updates in recent years. Firstly, Klei is one of the most diligent free update teams on Steam, but the design team of Don't Starve Together is clearly not capable of handling such a large volume of games. Klei gradually updated Famine into a high-quality game with 80 points, while the original game before going out to sea was close to a perfect score.

The design direction of the entire skill tree is incorrect. This is not a matter of details, but rather an unclear team positioning and individual positioning for each role.
The result is wanting everything, with some skills designed just to be put in, high learning costs, and weak skill relevance.

The Planar Damage mechanism in the Deadly Brightshade version is not suitable for Don't Starve Together.
This is still not a matter of details, but rather the percentage algorithm and true damage system should not be designed because any values in Don't Starve Together are important and proficiently mastered by people, and mixed damage can lead to incalculable confusion.

3. The decoration system has never been formed. Currently, 50% of the decorations for famine rely on skin, 30% rely on building units/items, and 20% rely on land.
As one of the few sources of game duration in the later stages of the game, Don't Starve Together should have a complete decoration system and add actual decorative items for players to match on their own.
The ideal situation is 50% building units/items, 30% skin, and 20% land.

4. Like the ocean system, it has not yet formed.
What is the player's attitude towards going out to sea now? Hurry up and retrieve the resources of the four islands and move them back to the base, so we won't go out to sea anymore.
Klei has been adding content all along, but unfortunately his design ability is insufficient, resulting in a wrong direction of effort. Even if Klei releases 10 islands, the attitude of players is still to take the resources back to the mainland.
There are two ways to solve the problem of maritime accidents.
The first step is to abandon the Boat system and make transportation more convenient.
The second design is to have a group of permanent resources at sea, encouraging daily outings.

5. Resist factories.
Klei has been resisting various types of truancy by players, repairing many card walls, card ships, and invincible card slots.
But the later stages of open survival games cannot escape the two major endings of factory and home renovation.
In most similar games, there is an ultimate goal of automation, and the survival pressure of Don't Starve Together has weakened significantly compared to 5 years ago. In the early stages, a slow pace of resources can be maintained, and in the later stages, the official can encourage players to design various types of automation instead of relying on Gugu Chicken to develop new factories for players to copy.

These are the 5 major issues, it's just my personal experience.
Perhaps everyone is quite satisfied with the current situation, but these are all directional issues rather than details.
I'm worried that Klei doesn't have a more comprehensive underlying plan for Don't Starve Together, regarding what can and cannot be done.
At present, it seems that it is still plagued by too many quality of life updates and additional content additions
Welcome to point out my mistake          72likes

card walls, card ships:The meaning is to use special means to place the wall and boat in a position that cannot be built

invincible card slots:The meaning is by using special methods to put hostile creatures in a state where they cannot counterattack or move

truancy:The meaning  is to easily or quickly kill the boss through some means

factories:Buildings that quickly acquire certain resources, some of which require techniques such as card slots, card boats, and card walls

Sorry but I would like to understand - are people not happy with that Abigail is more consistent at hitting her targets? She used to miss them entirely apparently. They had to remove the flower shroud because it wasn't exactly as they'd expect people want Wendy to be so the item was removed in favor of playing Wendy to play together with Abigail while Wendy herself being a 'glass cannon' as they described it while using Abigail as her damage source, so they improved on her abilities and different play styles for different affinities.

Well, yes, there have been weird updates there and there because their update schedule was a bigger mess before by trying to push updates each month. It was bad for a big game like Don't Starve Together now is but at least they've changed their update model and updates feel a lot more cleaner than before which in my opinion is a big positive.

The ocean is barren due to the problem of the map being too small. We hear you loud and clear about there needing more exploration feeling to traveling the sea so people like me had ideas that we posted about adding different world generation scenarios like multiple islands, archipelago, or some challenge worlds. It's not high on priority list though for now it seems.

A lot of in-game items sure do look great with cosmetics! Generally that's just how the studio sustains itself, that is natural now for many years. I can't imagine myself a different model for gaining skins though, since base game items are supposed to look like they were hand made by survivors that make items look practical instead of looking good. Skins are there just to make things look cool and reimagined. But also that's why big skin bundles exist now and on big discounts too! Don't have to spend money unless anyone wants to, people play without using skins sometimes too.

First of all, I gotta say thank you and appreciate for you to try and work to translate to English in best you can from your community's responses. I am unsure if Klei has any communication managers on Chinese side but they always take feedback from here or Steam forums (I assume steam forums too) regardless.

Secondly, in general a lot of what you said in your concerns also plagues our community because the game's future feels uncertain and Klei doesn't really like sharing details just to keep the element of surprise always there on each release. It keeps people on their toes and waiting like it's a holiday on each time they release something because people sure will come and try new things out.

Thirdly, in general the community seems to be fairly satisfied with the state of the game. If we talk about planar damage yea, that is very new and weird but the content isn't finished and we simply got new types of resources they introduced to us. I don't see them stopping development anytime soon because they're releasing weirder and more controversial things, and they are controversial only because they are very different from original idea of the game.

If I assume it right, this is just the beginning of what's to come. They are making assets, new designs and mechanics in order to pave way for the future and people are panicking because the future is coming in very slow pace because it's being actively developed and Klei are listening to everyone's feedbacks. Yours is important too, so it is good to be active.

---

Sadly though one thing I've notice that some people coming from Chinese community here to forums acting very angry and spiteful and rude. Not all of them, some very particular few that are unhappy with the game's direction or it's state. Klei can't make everyone happy, not even English speaking players, but generally the game is rated really high anyway and it's because they listen to us to what feels good and not. Ask your friends to be active here too if you can because their opinions are valid, but we all have to be civil about it.

I strongly recommend reducing the response shield time to 3 to 5 minutes. Staying at home for two days is too slow.
Not all players have such patience and time.
Making players wait is definitely not a creative or unique idea    20likes

I don't think shields are actually very useful because they have the ability to startle and dig graves. I estimate that Spectral Cure All is sufficient.
On the contrary, prolonging the duration of medication is useless. Usually no medication is needed, Spectral Cure All is the primary choice when taking medication. The original medication may only be used for less than a day.
If I'm fighting a boss, I just need to attack without moving. My habit is to keep the Beefalo Bell at a distance, and when Beefalo's health is low, I leave Beefalo directly to fight. Boss probably doesn't have much health left
The tombstone skill is quite good, at least it can produce a large amount of evil flowers and achieve the large-scale production of Nightmare Fuel.
Moon seems to be good at fighting bosses, but most of the time requires AOE and cannot switch at any time. It is destined to use Moon Abigail in the middle and later stages.
But currently it's acceptable, maybe not very strong, but it won't make people feel nauseous. 48 likes

Although Wendy's skill tree will surely be adjusted later, the textures of Moonlight Abigail and Shadow Abigail this time are of such poor quality. It would be better if Moonlight Abigail were a bit more lively. Her animation effects look rather dull.
Shadow Abigail is extremely ugly. Moonlight Abigail has the texture of a lunar creature. Why can't Shadow Abigail have a texture like that of the shadow monsters and add some spikes with a shadowy texture or something? The simple and crude black-and-white gradient is just too ugly. Shadow entities are designed to be a threat that you personally have to deal with or if you fail then you'll be overwhelmed. Sanity is part of the gameplay and shadows will chase you if you won't maintain it. It has been core threat while fighting anything else to force you to multitask. Only exception is Willow who has Bernie that is made to deal with nightmares.

Well, I think for a player who has already defeated the Celestial Champion, killing Shadow Creatures isn't that difficult. He may just dislike this kind of repetitive work.

Moreover, I think it's most likely referring to the Shadow Creatures during the Ancient Uprising(when the Thulecite Medallion turns red), like the Lurking Nightmares and so on.

the Moon and the Shadows are in an adversarial relationship. They could reduce some of the damage to Shadow Creatures to improve the comfort level.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, as far as I know, Klei did set up a communication post on Bilibili. However, they don't reply on it. They just issue some update announcements and hold some small activities like photo collections.

For a long time, it's been difficult for the voices of Chinese players to reach the Klei official team. Just like with the skill tree of the Valkyrie, we also had our opinions, just as what was mentioned in the comments I copied and relayed.

In our words, Wendy's skill tree update this time has triggered all the negative impacts brought by Klei's not-so-good updates in recent times.

As expressed in the comments I translated, there aren't many people supporting Klei, maybe just one or two.

If we count those comments that I saw without any likes (due to Bilibili's official recommendation mechanism where some relatively new comments don't attract much attention), there aren't too many of them either, probably accounting for around 20% at most.

So, actually, the Chinese community definitely doesn't like Wendy's skill tree update.

The comments on Bilibili are relatively mild. As for Baidu Tieba, you can take a look at it. The polls shown in the posts made by others there indicate that 60% of the people are dissatisfied with it.

of course, I also apologize for the remarks made by my fellow players. I think that any criticism should not involve insulting words or personal attacks.

The number of participants isn't large because they were all posted within less than five hours. At the bottom is dissatisfaction and at the top is satisfaction. Then there are five different attitudes in total, and another aspect involves three different degrees.

Thank you for such a thoughtful and detailed response—I truly appreciate the effort you've put into understanding the situation.

For me personally, my dissatisfaction stems from the anticipation I had for a well-rounded Wendy and Abigail update. I've been looking forward to it for so long, and when the result didn't meet my expectations, it felt disheartening. As you pointed out, Klei's approach of keeping updates under wraps to maintain the element of surprise is a double-edged sword. It's exciting when everything aligns with what players hope for, but when the surprise falls short of expectations, it can lead to disappointment, especially for characters people feel deeply connected to.

Regarding the Chinese community, I believe Klei does have team members fluent in Chinese. Their update posts on Steam and platforms like WeChat are written with great fluency, showing a clear understanding of the language. They also have an account on Bilibili, but the frustration comes from their lack of engagement there. Many players interpret the absence of replies as ignorance or overconfidence, though personally, I don't think that's Klei's intent—it's just how it's perceived by some.

Lastly, thank you for maintaining a positive perspective on the Chinese player base. It is indeed a large, kind, and diverse group, even if there are occasional outliers. Your long and thoughtful reply really means a lot, and it's comforting to see such understanding in the community.

Have a great day!

Two main things: The problem with polling and comment pulling like this is that 100 people could think it needs drastic changes and could have 100 different ideas of how to do it and for each of them the other 99 would think the new idea is bad and needs to be changed. IMO a broad consensus of "unhappy" isn't informative or even that revealing in this case. I have not seen any ideas of specific feedback or changes that have widespread consensus of "this would make everything better"'; instead it's a general feeling that it isn't what a particular person expected or wanted.

Moreover, the only ideas that I do see are basically nonstarters or sort of absurd. If Abigail never died because she got the kind of buffs that are thrown around and could attack Shadow enemies, what exactly is Wendy's weakness? That if she voluntarily decides to dismiss Abigail she'll deal less damage?
