Upcoming Changes to Game Engine?

Recommended Posts

Spiders and Bees... These two mobs as we well know are enough to FRY even the best servers. I can't count how many times a Klei Official Server got brought down by a player walking through a bee field while raining. Even now in the Beta playing Wortox while on a beefy dedicated server and farming spiders with Winter Feast on shot my server up to 111% of CPU usage.

I can only assume when Webber's skilltree comes out there will naturally be an increase in Webber players. Now ofc I'm not blaming Webber players or anything but mostly a question to the developers, will there be changes to how the game loads and offloads on screen mobs?

From what I remember from a post about this a few weeks ago, it is less of an engine thing, and more of a "spiders/bees are some of the first mobs added to DS ever and are heavily unoptimized as a result of it" thing. In particular, spiders have a not-so fun quirk where they check every single entity, including other spiders, when they try to find a piece of meat to eat on the ground. This wouldn't require a serious engine change, just some changes to code to make them not be absurdly taxing to a server.

Doubt it, other than 64bit + high definition items I haven't seen any important change to the engine since launch.

I feel they don't really need to change the engine (other than maybe a way to allow DST to use multiple CPU cores at once per shard for servers, though I imagine that is not a small feat at all). Most of the issues rely on the coding, which they have pretty much been working on since ~2022. You can have the most flawless engine in the world and it's not going to do much if the coding end of things is not ideal, which a lot of early DS/T things suffer from quite a bit.
