Walter would be 1000 times more pleasant to play if this was changed

What do you want this weapon to be? The idea of aiming to shoot is flawed and unfun, Wixie from UM has it and it's not fun at all. 

All weapons in this game are hold F, so...

How would be worse than holding F? Aiming for powerful effects imo would be funnier and will require more skill than simply walking and holding F...

Probally do something like forge where you hold f but can also use an ability that has to be aimed.

 

Just throwing this idea out, What if Similar to Willow's Lunar flames ability, you could move while shooting, 

I think an annoyance I have with Walter's slingshot is that if you try to fight in range, unless the enemy is a super slow moving boss, you never really have enough time to finish the shooting animation, and the enemy always closes the gap (god forbid the enemy moves out of the way and dodges your easily miss-able Round)   it makes Melee combat just feel more mandatory than playing safe in range when you have the choice to do so, maybe also slow down Walter's move speed slightly similar to Willow's skill when firing so the player can't just out speed and out range it garunteed with a high speed boost combo but I feel it'd help The slingshot be more of a optional Weapon for some specific types of combat

I think he meant more fun, which is subjective.

Taking a closer look at the actual mechanics behind aiming every shot in this game, though? I think it'd be very hard to balance. 

Most bosses will stand still most of the time or move very slowly, so if the game remembers where you were last aiming and allows you to fire another shot without having to first aim again, you could effectively spam them. That means they can't be too strong since the difficulty of aiming wouldn't be that high, which'd make it just feel like a more tedious version of what we have now. 

If the game doesn't remember where you last aimed, individual shot damage would have to be pretty high to make up for the tedium of having to line stuff up again every time you shoot, especially since that'd lower Walter's already slow attack rate even further. 

Also, what happens if you miss? Does the projectile delete itself? What's the limit on how far it can fly before it either falls to the ground as an item you can pick up or just breaks? Could you, say, miss Bearger and accidentally plink a Beefalo in the cranium and aggro an entire herd by accident?

You can already miss if the target moves..

I wouldn't mind if it stayed slow firing rate BUT the damage of all pellets should probably be 2x of what we have now, and you could move while you are charging your shot (Maybe if you are riding Woby?)

Also, some AOE special shot for freezing/poop/slow pellets would make the character more interesting as well.

Maybe they can make it so you can spam F to do quick weak shots or hold to have a strong one

I don't think I'd want the long startup completely removed, I think that's what makes it an interesting weapon to use. The problem is when you have to do it over and over each time you dodge or swap targets. I would make it so there's a cooldown of about a second where you don't have to do it again if you've just been firing.

Maybe hold to load up more pellets at once?

They did write comment next to the cod of howlizler mentioning a Walter skill tree

dst combat is not designed for sustained ranged options.

therefore the slingshot has a huge rev-up delay to balance this out.

consider that klei literally had to remake a significant part of mob combat behavior just to accomodate wanda's alarming clock (it has long range)

I mean, the uncompromising discord server did a poll, most people say its way more fun than Walter currently is, which everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I'd say if the majority says that she's fun, it should be treated as a better option, simply because then a higher percentage of players would enjoy the gameplay

and yeah, she is better than Walter currently is. Not necessarily her shooting mechanic.
