Filament Math - 4 years minimum to get 100%

Recommended Posts

I have 1350 hours in ONI, maybe half of that is after they added blueprints and filament. I have barely anything unlocked. I decided to do some math to put into perspective how absurd the situation is currently.

As it stands now, it takes 1,023,200 filament to buy every item in the shop. (currently tired so i may have missed a couple items)

This means that one would have to melt down 568.44 SPLENDID blueprints to afford everything. Assuming every blueprint you get is splendid, that would take 190 weeks, or 48 months, or 3.9 years.

As we all know, the majority of blueprints we get are common/decent/nifty, so let's do the math for if you got all nifty drops.

1023200 / 800 = 1279 melted down nifty blueprints
1279 / 3 = 426.3 total weeks required
426.3 / 4 / 12 = 8.9 years required

This is unacceptable Klei.  I can't even comprehend what design philosophy led to this decision. It doesn't make you more money, and it's so broken no player will reasonably be able to unlock the things they want. Not only that, but when people started using cheat engine to get around this BS, you locked that down too. Why lock it down if you weren't intending to sell microtransactions? It's a PVE game, just let people do what they want.

The current system only makes sense if they intended to monetize it.  If they're not, the really do need to make some adjustments.  The system as is is both frustrating and insulting, two things I've never experienced from Klei before.

Notably, this paragraph is in the 2024 roadmap:

“We're also continuing to build out the blueprints system, creating more opportunities for colony customization. You'll be able to earn blueprints through gameplay, and we expect to include new collections in DLC as well.”

But do you NEED to buy EVERY item in the shop? Most of them I don't even like and would never use in my games. Sure, it's a matter of taste, but I'm not convinced you have to have everything

You could also don't melt down the blueprints and just roll lucky to get all the items you want. It's 4 times cheaper this way. Ofc nobody has this kind of luck, but your calculations don't factor in the fact that you can have some of the items without using the fillament.

TBF this can be read as "new DLC will add more skins to existing system" without anything new to the system as a whole

I mean - sure I would love to have the system improved, I would love to support ONI with some optional fillament purchases, but I don't think it's the end of the world to have the system in it's current form and waiting a little longer to get skins I want. If we were able to get everything after a few months, it would get boring really quickly

"Ofc nobody has this kind of luck,"

Then why bring it up? I didn't factor in the fact that you *might* get some higher rarity items because it happens so rarely it doesn't make sense to include it.

"But do you NEED to buy EVERY item in the shop?"

Nobody said you do, but having to wait multiple years and still not even be able to access half of what's there is not ok. Not only that, but there are a ton of completionists that 100% complete every game they enjoy.

How would the game get boring if you unlocked everything in a few months? If your sole enjoyment of the game is unlocking cosmetics, I don't know what to tell you.

I would argue that it’s quite boring as it stands. If Klei doesn’t want to monetize filament, I would suggest some or all of the following:

1. Increase weekly drops from 3 to ~5

2. Increase recycling rate from 25% to ~50%

3. Reward players with a bunch of filament for each colony imperative completed

That said, I would be super happy if they monetized it. Something like 1000 filament per $1 would be ok.

There is another issue too, those blueprints are only available in ONLINE MODE!!! This is an unacceptable garbage!

I have been playing ONI since like 2018, bought 4 copies, two for myself and two as gifts for friends, I love the game, have 3000+ cycle colonies with one being 5200+. And I think Klei was one of the best if not the best game companies up until blueprints.

But this blueprint thing PISSES ME OFF! I don't want to be 100% online when I play the game! I paid for it (for two copies for myself and two gift copies), and I don't want this online garbage! Either make it available offline, or remove the thing altogether!

This feature WILL also die if the game support ends in some years, so this is absolutely unacceptable! Reinstall on a new machine in 5 years, and all your hard work is flushed down the toilet, no blueprints for you! And ONI is a game that will be worth returning to in 5, 10 and 15 years, so you WILL feel it!

I really hope that 'Stop Killing Games' initiative passes in EU, so that we as gamers are protected against this garbage (you should support the initiative if you can, check it out right now).

But super disappointed in Klei! So many good things they've done over the years, but now this! This is how you destroy your reputation!

I dont really care that much for the blueprints/filament, but it is sometimes nice to see nice drywall colors/designs and dupes with nice cloths(until you use atmo suits or in-game cloths ie snazzy suits and its variants XD) Keep in mind we dont know what else Klei has plans for in the upcoming updates. Im sure our next "content" update will maybe be at the end of 2024 or early 2025 or it can be a smaller update which can happen soon. Looking at what we have in the closet, the Frosty pack did give us some nice freebies which is good imo. but the real question is do you really want all the blueprints because there are some that I dont like and I probably gonna never use and im sure everyone have their likes and dislikes. So I think it comes down to get w/e you like. If anything most blueprints I go for is typically the Drywalls with nice designs cause drywall actually does make your base look nice than blueprints from specific buildings and cloths for dupes.

But here are My solutions and they are pretty simple for klei

1. Monetize it. DUH

2. If not Monetize then reduce the cost to craft blueprints with filament, and reduce the chances of getting a duplicate blueprints

You assume you have to pay with fillament for everything in the skin shop, but that is not true. You will get most of those items for free. Your math doesn't use that fact at all, that's why I bring it up. Sure, you might not be lucky enough to get ALL the skins you want, but most of them sounds possible.

OK maybe not the game as a whole, but this skin system. It's not a great system if it stops existing after few months.

I'm not saying the system is perfect and as I said: huge +1 for an option to buy more fillament, but your math is overly dramatic and I wouldn't say the things are as bad as you try painting them

I don't think this will happen sadly.

A Klei dev (Nome or JoeW I believe?) has mentioned DST's game support costs can be downscaled and changed. Assuming Klei would shut down (I really doubt it), I think they'll make cosmetics available or easily obtained in their online games.
I support the bill, though I believe it's meant to protect against developers outright leaving games unplayable? I'm not certain it would apply in ONI's case where only the cosmetics feature would be disabled.

Well, things are usually shut down when product stops generating profit, or there is another larger project that needs 150% of attention, or when there is some larger financial crisis. And installing older versions of software development tools, getting things to run again, opening and remembering the old code that's possibly written by someone who already left the company, doing testing for a product that was done 10 years ago is very unlikely during a squeeze, unless it was accounted for in the beginning. Also, who is doing security audits and patching on those servers if the game no longer generates active profit, or that is not a concern?

So unless there is a specific plan in place, I would count all network features as being dead on arrival. Better not get used to them so that you don't get disappointed when replaying the game in 5 or 10 years.

And from my perspective, I would like that Klei keeps generating profit from the product for as long as possible. As it means more DLCs, more patches, more tweaks, and so on. And ONI is amazing in that regard, the game has been improving since at least 2017, and it has been getting amazing content addons all the time.

But that does not mean I will touch anything that has 'gamification', 'micro-transactions', or 'non-mandatory-mandatory network only features' with a ten foot pole.

I would happily buy the cosmetic pack as a stand alone DLC for a price similar to other two DLCs if I know it will always stay in the library. But having this online only is not acceptable.

And I am starting to think that wider gaming audience is catching up to the trend too. Looking at the disaster of recent AAA games and how say Ubisoft has fared recently, it looks like anti gamer practices are actually starting to backfire.
