DST is dying and why its a good thing

Recommended Posts

Isn't it so weird how within the past year or two there's been so many "All the old players are leaving, b-but that's normal! It's always been like that! They'll come back... They'll come back... They'll come back... They'll come back..." threads but there were absolutely 0 of these from for the other 8 years of the game's life? It's almost like there's an actual reason the old players are leaving that's new and happened in the past couple years which they've repeatedly stated in dozens of different threads...

I play DST since Betadays and took a 2 year break. I did come back around a year ago with the Woodie skilltree Update. When the right content drops people come back.

I'm happy that you can still enjoy the game, but you're still playing so I'm not referring to you. I'm referring to all the mods which went on for years and only very recently got abandoned due to game updates killing their enjoyment of the game. I'm referring to how the entire roster of faces on the forum are entirely different than what they used to be for like 8 years straight. I'm referring to how so many of those people wrote elaborate thread after elaborate thread discussing their complaints with the direction the game was heading, and many of them wrote final threads saying they're leaving because of those changes. I'm referring to how if you look at the profiles of people you see when you play the game they'll be practically guaranteed to have gotten the game very recently. I'm referring to what everyone already knows is true because they keep making these threads pretending it isn't true.

Cheggf you're breaking my heart.

Anyways the forum has changed a lot, people just leave for... various reasons.

I wouldn't say the forum is indicative of whether or not older players still play.

Sorry, Maxposting. You & Hornete are still here.

I've been in the community since 2015 and this is a very misinformed take. Talk of how the game is dying and all the "old players" are leaving has been a thing for literally as long as I can remember. Being able to hold backpacks in your inventory pre-SW was fixed? This game is dead now, all of us veterans are LEAVING. ANR is adding raid bosses, decor and pets rather than new survival challenges? The game is dead now, all of us veterans are LEAVING. New content is focused on the Forge and Gorge events rather than adding more ANR-styled content to the base game? This game is dying so fast, all of us veterans are LEAVING. Return of Them is focusing on some OCEAN instead of more ANR content or events? This game is literally dead, it won't last another year. I could go on (and I even skipped Hamlet which had like 3 of these), but you get the point.

People have been making threads about how "the game is dying and the playerbase is leaving" on a regular basis for as long as I can remember, they even usually followed this format of posting the Steam stats and having to have it explained as to what the stats actually mean. The difference is just that in the past there wasn't this insistence that the old players would come back, but instead a far more hostile demand for the complaining players who were still here to leave already (not that I agree with such a thing). The thread itself isn't anything new and the implication that something new is pushing old players away can also be applied to all the content that the current playerbase loves and considers integral to the game, like ANR, which was a new thing that pushed old players away and then changed the definition of old players.

you can look at 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021 posts and realise that almost all of them got people that'ren't there in a post from another year out of those

Can't expect someone to be here or online 24/7. I'm currently on a burnout on dst, I just can't get into it except for forge occasionally. This is not because the updates are bad, It's just something I don't want to play atm. Alot of people are like this. Dst seems to be a Flux of playing and taking a break. Kinda like the 2 week minecraft period meme.

Eh, speak for yourself.. video games are becoming outrageously expensive, filled with DLCs and Microtransactions, and now days a game can release to critical success (like Hi-Fi Rush) and still have the development studio who worked on it cancelled and closed.

I don’t have money to just “waste” on buying games anymore like I use to when I’d go out and buy PSOne games at 20$ a disc.

And perhaps the worst part of that is that you can literally pay 200$ for a game these days, and you still don’t even “Own” the game anymore, cause they can choose to cancel services for it, and delist it from the game market.

To put it bluntly: I don’t have the time nor the money to waste on trying to find a bunch of different games to when I’ve grown bored of what I already have.

So when it comes to me the #1 priority in what I look for in buying my games is how much replay value I’m going to get out of it.

And I’m just gonna tell you right now that IF I invested into one long-term game world for DST I’d grow very bored and had deleted the game off my Xbox a long time ago.. because for me- the “Fun” and “Charm” of the game (or franchise) was exploring randomly generated game worlds, and with a huge cast of wacky characters with unique playstyles.

I died ALOT in the single player game and usually before even making it to day 30, so I Always had new worlds to explore.

every quarter of the year it felt as if a hundred different established people cycled in and out of the forums from my perspective, as an oldhead myself I disagree with your assessment. I can understand the perception in some way, but i would not diagnose this perceived issue to the quality of the game, if anything what you're talking about is more just the absence of the off topic forums again. we don't have a place to retire to whenever we stop talking about DST for a little while, so we just disappear for a time, now.

you're the only one who seems to get it, but you react with the most condescending emote.

Oh, my apologies. I don't understand emotes and I thought that one represented this middle face. What I meant by it was a sort of existential despair from being reminded about that.

I'm not as new as I look, actually - I was back on the DS forums in the fairly early days of Don't Starve before food spoilage, it's just that, back then, I was on a different account. I switched to an alt for reasons related to my username, I didn't want my IRL friends finding it and logging into Klei forums again through steam using that alt led to me making this account.
But, yeah, my story is that I was around for DS back then, switched to DST when it came out and missed Shipwrecked and Hamlet as a result (I stopped playing original DS), got bored of original DST and stopped playing it for a few years, and then came back to it and have been playing it regularly. Old players do sometimes come back - what got me back into it was actually all the changes that'd been made. It makes me feel like there's so much more to do and look forward to in the game now.
