Animation quality for new animations is bad. Please don't change them or update them to more fitting ones. And some minor non-animation related changes I think should be done.

I'm not going to go very into detail, but here's my examples of the new, old, and unused which could look better.

 

First of all Klei, it's really you make new animation for attacks, but I don't like removing the old one. The old one was great and this new one isn't as great I would be very disappointed if it was fully removed, sad even.

I didn't even bother taking a GIF of the new back attack animation that for some reason instead of being exclusive to certain weapons replaces attack animation for all weapons and I really don't like that.

This is example of the old side and new side animation.

The old one looked goofy, sure, but the goofiness and very harsh movement for example of the pigtails and the little weird foot movement are charming to me, this new one looks like it's way too "clean" and because of that it looks stiff to me and loses its charming don't starve uniqueness to me.

 

The back one doesn't even need a GIF when I saw it not only the new one is not smooth like the old one, but it doesn't match at all either. You guys should make a matching front and side and just give it to specific weapons like axes, nightmare sword, boomerang, ect. not replacing the old one which fit perfectly with the DS attack animation.

 

The only thing I liked from the changes to the front attack animation is the fix to hairpigtails not snapping anymore...

but that's all that should be done to old animations! They should have visual bugs fixed, not be completely redone :/

Add new animations for new things and fix old ones is visual bugs and z-order for symbols and add all new symbols into them but don't remove the old animations completely :wilsondisappointed:! That's my complaints for the attack animation changes, I really hope they will be reverted to the old ones which just have the pigtails visual snapping glitch fixed for the front one and you guys can polish the new back attack to be smooth and make a front and side one for use of specific weapons.

 

 

The next thing that bugged me was the animations used for falling into the void. I think they are very low quality and there are unused/existing animations back from the original don't starve days which are far superior in quality with the animations looking a lot more smooth, natural, and have the spirit of don't starve in them.

Here's the existing animations I think with a new edited version of the animation (in the case of the one falling directly into the void) would be a lot more fitting and they are higher quality looking as well.

I think with new versions of these animation with minor edit it would be superior to the new ones.

The new "abyss_fall" animation it looks very slow and awkward. The player slowly falls "into" the void and abruptly disappears making it very awkward and unpolished looking. I think a new version of this "teleport" animation which the player for the first part plays the "drowning" animation which their arms flail around and then the shadow hand grabs the player and takes them into the darkness of the void would be a lot more fitting and have the unique don't starve charm to the animation.

For the falling from the cave ceiling I think the old "enter" animation just looks smoother and higher quality the only change I can see it needing is when the player falls on their butt the lower arms and hand are not behind the players legs but in front of them like when they get back up, but other than that I think it's superior and should be used instead of this new one which the player just semi-slowly falls onto their back.

 

That's my complaints with the new animations for players.

 

My only other complaints is when the player sinks into the void and falls down from the cave ceiling they should take some penalties like drowning does or at minimum when the shadow hands take you into the darkness the player should lose some sanity, but still drowning penalties would be good.

The giant depth worm thing shouldn't deal ridiculous 500+ damage when it swallows you.

The bridges should be able to extend more than 3 tiles for higher price, right now they are worthless and expensive.

Get rid of the "shiny" glow on the "Icker" mob because it makes it even less believable it is made out of nightmare fuel than it already is because of the whole jelly look.

The golden horns on the king rabbit having no shading which is fine, but when it's dropped as an item the thing to burrow or whatever it looks very weird it has no shading and unlike his horns they have big black circles and the outline is very thing it looks very awkward over all.

The Rabbit King is dropkick animation should have a proper "pst" animation where it looks like it lands on the ground after hitting a player instead of abruptly going on the ground.

Make the texture of the ruins nightmare phase "shadow shark" rougher looking like the crawling horror and terror beak because it is too smooth and clean right now. Especially, make its eyes more creepy looking by having its eyes not look "angry" but are blank circles like the the crawling horror and terror beak which gives it a more creepy feel. When you add "emotive" eyes to things it makes them feel less creepy/scary which nightmares should be creepier and scarier.

 

That's all my current complaints, hope at least the attack animations will be reverted because it really bothers me.. peace...

I'm gonna be honest, aside from the pigtails in the new one moving harsher, I don't really see the difference....

It might be nitpicky, but I tested both of them and the newer one does look stiffer to me than the old one. I also like the older one better since it's also from the original game and I believe if something isn't broke don't fix it, the only error with the attack animation was that abrupt hair snapping if they fix that there is nothing wrong with it that it needed to be redone :(

The animation changes are very drastic for someone like me who constantly studies and looks closely at them.

They're smothered smoothed and slowed down, a lot of the quicker movements got paved over and its a bit jarring, like the leg kicks in the side view.
This is something I can get used to but I am more used to the older one. The up view is the only one I'd really say is bothersome enough to bug me though.
I appreciate the fixed pigtails at least, though.

I completely agree, I'm not quite sure what spurred klei to make such unnecessary animation changes. I'm just asking because I couldn't really tell with that one it's a lot more subtle then the up one. I just noticed the leg kick in the old one, which i'm a bit neutral to. But yeah I guess the new one does look a bit stiffer.

There's a code comment that suggests that penalties are pending (or at least no penalties isn't final), they'll likely add them soon.

I really dislike the animations for falling to the void and form the celling, they look really cheap why can't they use other high quality animations as a base.

The falling to the void animation looks static and looks bad especially with skins with small details, it's very abrupt but I guess it maches the animation of drowning

The animation of falling from the celling just looks like the Knockback animation reused. I really dislike this animation and I hope we can get a better quality one
