Stop Building Megabases

Recommended Posts

making a base never was optimal so saying that mega basing's suboptimal now's practically nonsensical because it always was and people were only doing it for fun and usually made many things for using as decorations instead of getting some sort of benefit in game from them

Because I don't want to wait until endgame to have a storage system. I don't enjoy boss rushing.

I also don't like how expensive and deep into progression elastispacers are. It doesn't make much sense since organizing easier doesn't necessarily give you a huge gameplay advantage

I've been using that chest + alchemy + 3 chest storage system in the picture as my workshop since DS and even though it's evolved several times it's always worked for me. You can optimize your base if you really try to come up a system outside the box which 99% of DST players fail to do. I consider the storage system I use extremely optimized, and I have DST friends that ask me to come on their world and organize their stuff using my system because of how familiar and effective it is to them.

i'm not sure about what's even the point of this response, making bases's suboptimal in general and it's best to put stuff onto the ground instead of into a chest

because chests look pretty

I can definitely understand building something you like to look at for it's own sake. I've been working on my cawnival for a about two in game seasons just simply making it look nice. However, I believe you should still balance form and function. When I am visiting other people's megabases, 9 times out of 10 they can't tell me where their own stuff is. If I am looking for something, sometimes I need to rifle through 12 chests to find what I am looking for if we have it, and ALL of them if we don't.

I know my own storage like the back of my hand. If someone asks me where the charcoal is I can tell them exactly which slot in which chest it's in, and if it's not there then we don't have any.

okay well I disagree that it's best to put stuff on the ground because I think it's actually both ugly and not only suboptimal, but dysfunctional even

nah, it's better because you don't need to spend time on making chests nor looking through them if you got multiple

Building chests is neither time consuming nor expensive, unless you are a speedrunner and you're playing exclusively solo, and even then I'd still build a chest because I'm not playing for 100% efficiency. If I was I would just be playing Factorio.

it's both

then what was the point of saying that mega bases're useless now even though they never were efficient and most people that made them didn't do that because of thinking that they were?

A lot of things about DST are flat out broken and in strange areas of the game.

Its super hard to explain that without going into a massively long TL:DR but I’ve been gaming for over 30 years, I’ve played just about everything you can name.. and I pride myself on being able to recognize a game by its “pattern” This is to say for example: being able to memorize the entire level layout, enemy placement etc in a Super Mario level.

The problem when it comes to DST is that certain challenges are placed so far into the late game that by the time you unlock those challenges, you’ve already conquered much worse than that just to reach that point.

As someone who plays the game almost strictly solo one of the items for example that I find little to any use for is refrigerators, plain and simply if you are out exploring the world by the time you return home to your fridges chances are your foods stored in them would’ve spoiled.

I can see only ONE true gameplay advantage with the larger storage chests, and that would obviously be placing them onto a Boat.

But even that makes it a strange decision to lock behind such late game.

Or in Terms anyone can Understand: It’s like If Minecraft was to be changed and players are now being asked to kill the Ender Dragon in Minecraft before you can extend the size of your storage chest, but at that point of the game… what is the point in even needing the larger storage box in the first place?

so true actually, but I'm anticipating more end game content, a la Terraria's hardmode

okay man I think we're talking past each other at this point

Ok this is bizarre. First haven't you stated you haven't even killed fuelweaver? So why talk about something so out of your world. After fuelweaver there is pretty much only mega basing so chest areas are very much needed, I've already spent like 4000 rocks on some projects, that would be an absurd number of chests to store it all.

Also take one look at hermitcraft on youtube and you will see the need for better chests. Shulkers are great but every person always needs like 50 for their projects. Minecraft also has so many items so it's due for an item like the elastispacer.

But yes like many other items in dst the elastispacer is useless if you don't mega base after.

This isn't a hypothetical, this has been the reality for 8 years. Defeating the Ender Dragon grants access to the rest of the End dimension, where you can find and kill Shulkers to craft Shulker Boxes, which have the same amount of inventory slots as a chest but can be held in your inventory or even placed inside a chest, effectively increasing your storage in a chest from 1 item per slot to 27 items per slot.

My point which you completely missed, is that storage chests aren’t for mega-basing.. and it’s odd that having more storage is locked to “Mega-Basing”

I can think of several ways that having a really large storage box would benefit the player, in fact some FPS games I’ve played have SOLD storage boxes as Paid DLC content so players can place items into their storage cache and pull them out when needed.

One such game that comes to mind would be Borderlands, where buying the 10$ Moxxis Underdome DLC also granted weapon storage in the Bank.

I may not have killed “Insert whatever dumb DST boss you want to name here”

But I know what the heck a storage box is for, and I know roughly about WHERE that should come into play in the game, and no… late game mega-basing ain’t it chief.

You need to concede when you lose a point dude, not double down - it makes it so that people have a hard time taking your points seriously in the future. :/

whats a....oh, long chest, i dont know how to make them and i doupt many even remember them, given i seem to never see them in random puplic servers even in those that kill moon boss before the first winter....so you want only 5 berry bushes for like a 10 player server? or what exactly do you count as a "mega baser"? because i think there more like makin an entire biom size as there base, not something you see in random puplic servers, wich they seem all reasonable in size given alsol that there is more then 1 single player in said base

Stop telling people how to play the game.

No, if I pick lights out mode… WX78 is banned for obvious reasons.

I wish Klei would actually allow me to tell people how to play the game and then let me enforce that.

or in other words- it’s like being able to “ban” certain characters (smite gods) abilities, or weapons.

Alot of games do it, and give players the freedom to force others to play by their rules.

But DST is too much sandbox for its own good.

I actually can't take you seriously when you pull up the 18th game that is no where close to being  similar to don't starve.

You are actively stating you have not even interacted with all the content in the game and degrade anything that doesn't fit into your vision of a game that has a completely different vision.
