Coffee should be added to DST, but on one condition.

It should negate or reduce drowsiness effects just like mushcake that doesn't allow you to fall asleep. It could become a farm plant we grow and have to find their seeds to grow some, either it being from monkey treasures or some other way. I like the idea of having coffee but not it's effects that at best are fit for singleplayer just because we gotta travel many worlds and it helps that a lot when exploring giant maps.

I don't like speedboost from it, it's addicting and makes me want to keep making coffee wasting time more and more on just getting that rush for quicker travels. It makes players overpowered for a set duration of time, letting them avoid many dangers.

We don't need old coffee and it's design as much as some may think: we got beefalo, characters that have abilities for travel, wormholes, telelocator staffs and lazy explorers. We can build bridges or boats to bridge parts of the map. Traversing isn't that bad unless it being annoying to do in caves if we got setups made and built. Once Klei solves void walking issue maybe we can finally drill through cave walls Infrastructure and hard work will help with travels.

Honestly, a mini update of coffee, tea, condiments, pickled goods update as a whole could be a fun bundle to have to give effects like they are potions in a way.

To stop withdrawal is to never stop drinking coffee. It just makes coffee even more necessary and addicting.

 I've been hoping to play with a thirst / drinkables system for ages, if they have "potion-kind" effects even more so.

I think Coffee could be an addition to moon quay, with beans and bushes being added to the portal loot table. That or adding them to sunken treasure would be neat, since it would fit alongside the other rare plants. 

Coffee cake and iced coffee would also make a nice addition.
