aaaand this should be the last thing i post for now.

strange, i feel some sort of full circle thing (despite the fact that i'm definitely coming back after what i need to focus on has passed) given the first poll i ever made was on character mains as well (though i nuked the results by accident)

As always, feel free to vote, and discuss in the comments!

Winona???

I could have sworn i added her before warly thanks for this catch also

Question only allow 20 options and if i rearrange the order of quedriond the responses will and shall get messed up royally so ill replace the no main option with Winona for future reference

1. WILSON (DS/ROG/SW/HM mainly) AND MAXWELL [obviously]

2. a) I started with Wilson because there only WAS Wilson back then, and then grew obsessed with Maxwell when I figured out he can become playable

    b) Wilson and Maxwell have my favourite backstories / character traits. I adore those two specifically because of the many artwork occasions in which Maxwell and Wilson interacting with each other [Maxwell and Wilson playing Chess, and Maxwell offering Wilson a cursed[?] apple are my two favourite artworks in the whole DS wiki.]

   c) secret headcanons :wilson_evil: [just joking! I wouldn't keep any of my headcanons secret if I was asked about them.] I am just a person who is obsessed with voiceactors and who adores to listen to music of any kind, so it shouldn't be a surprise my main reason for choosing ANY of my favourite character is their voice(actor) so basically, Wilson and Maxwell have my favourite "voices" so they automatically went into the category favourite characters, and I am one of those people who only chooses their game characters based on sympathy, never based on the actual game-mechanics / abilities.

d) see above.

3. I would probably NOT play DST AT ALL if suddenly it was a spin-off with completely different characters without the original cast being able to play with. Or in general if Maxwell or Wilson had suddenly retired. [e.g. if Wilson was the new nightmare king and an NPC or Maxwell being ereased from the game after dying when being freed from the throne]

[Just saying: This reminds me that I still would love to know if this "person" will one day be given a good place in the DS/T lore. I think I remember there being a decoration in Hamlet with a photo of this "person" on the wall, but my memory may play a trick on me here]

My main usually changes from time to time, but the character I will always default to when I'm bored is Wigfrid.

Wig is pretty much the reason I have the amount of hours I do on this game. She was always the more interesting combat character to me out of the cast (even before her rework), but the main reason I enjoyed playing her was that I could feel myself getting better at the game with her. I always struggled with bosses when first playing like ohhh, nearly 6 years ago now? yeesh. anyway, it helped being able to learn bosses with her, which let me more consistently beat them with other characters and survive in general.

Nowadays I enjoy playing Worm for his unique attributes and play style, and WX for the variety in circuitry. Though as much as I enjoy WX currently, I still think there are some problems with the rework. Really looking forward to their skill tree for this reason.

Walter by boi, early game master with s-tier speed boost and inventory for hoarding.

For skilled players he has so much QoL and flexibility. No sanity drain from darkness and minimal from wetness makes things like cave-basing so easy. (Cave basing near slurtle mounds allows for easy farming of snurtle armour which is op for walter.)

Klei have introduced alot of marble sources from set pieces to nightmare werepig. So getting an early-ish bee queen kill is viable as long as you rush ruins for a mag, thulecite club for speed and some additional thulecite rounds.

Early game perks and skills always outcompete late game perks and skills. As getting setup early is alot more important than late game QoL like wandas teleport network.

I chose warly because is the character that make me experience the most ammount of content without having the feeling of losing time

With characters like wanda i get bored because the time playing is only filled with gathering NF and honey so there are only left fights that ends up faster and with less preparation than with other characters and building.

I prefer a character that rewards gathering different stuff like how, even if not strong, i love that i have a reason to farm salt and use it to make dishes like surf n turf healing tons of hp (i used them when i fight multiple CC) or how, despite being able to survive by eating only meat, im rewarded if i farm veggies for sanity dishes,  moqueca or the spice boosts

Never liked valkyries or helmets with wings neither mythology of boring gods and they greeds or blind clains even if a knew A LOT about them because of other games. Still start was rought i have tested everyone in the cast besides wigfrid and nothing had clicked with me, so i was like yeah..why not ? Long story cut short she is my main even since, a bucket of references, a nice backstory, good personality, amazing for teaching the basics and honestly... Who don't like some violence once in a while :wilson_evil:

I main Warly because I really like complex characters that have lots of options for handling various situations, and above all, his downside forces you to engage with a fun and often-neglected aspect of the game (learning how to cook more than a handful of useful foods).

Warly's downside makes him the only character who actually has a reason to make crock pot recipes other than meatballs and pierogis without severely limiting your choices like Wurt does. It means you actually have to learn a bunch of different recipes and manage your inventory better so you can keep different ingredients. Eggs, some kind of veggie, honey, and meat will serve you well on any trip, and if you're going sailing, it's a great idea to bring a few Tallbird eggs since tall scotch eggs are like a meaty stew that heals for 60. You also learn to love stonefruit - passively-growing veggies that last forever (until you mine them open) and free rocks. Not being able to eat things like cooked green caps or cacti for quick sanity does kind of suck, but if you're willing to farm or have someone doing it, that becomes a non-issue since, if you play Warly regularly, you will know how to make a wide variety of high-sanity foods (or if your world is post-spring/you're willing to hunt grass gators, jelly salad is an option). His downside also makes combat trickier since you can't just spam pierogis or blue caps for healing due to diminishing returns, so you're forced to get better at fighting and/or keep a variety of healing dishes on you if you plan on tanking.

Then there's Warly's special dishes. I'm not just talking about the ones that are good stats-wise, I'm talking about the ones that have additional functionality. Everyone knows about glowberry mousse's two-day passive glow and volt goat jelly's immense damage boost (which can actually put you past Wolfgang in DPS under the right conditions), but people sleep on the others.
Hot dragon chili salad? They last pretty long, only cost one pepper and one dragonfruit each (and any non-meat non-twig filler, and actually work as a thermal stone replacement, especially if you have something like a tam o' shanter. I've done a wintertime ruins clear using only them for warmth.
Fish cordon bleu? It's a great option if there's a limited amount of eyebrellas on your server, or even if you just want to use a helmet and a chest-slot item (like a mag for light and speed or armor to extend your helmet's durability) without getting wet during spring.
Asparagazpacho? Summer is now just spicy autumn.

Of course, his seasonings are (aside from volt goat chaud-froid) what everyone knows him for. When it comes to work, Warly can basically match mighty Wolfgang except for the crit mechanic - all he needs is a bit of honey for honey crystals and he can make himself chop trees and mine twice as fast. Give something with that to a Woodie in the morning and you're going to suffocate to death because every tree in the world will be chopped down by nightfall.
Garlic powder and chili flakes are great for combat, and seasoning salt... also exists.

I feel that Warly also synergizes pretty well with the Eye Mask/Shield of Terror. His ability to make crock pot dishes on the fly and his need for different ingredients means that you're likely to carry more food than you're going to eat on your own before it spoils, so you can either give it some of the monster meat you probably have in your backpack or cook up some meatballs if the durability's really low. Also, you can feed either of them glowberries or glowberry mousse and still get the glow, and it lets Warly benefit more from things that'd just serve as filler otherwise since he can't eat them raw for their benefits, like blue caps.

I am very much hoping he gets his skill tree next and that it doesn't negate his downside in any way (and I have high hopes for that since Wurt and Winona's trees left their downsides alone). He definitely needs some sort of planar damage spices and/or dishes, but I'd also just like to see more special function dishes.

That's hillarious but also sweet to see someone pick the least expected character as their main at the end :') Reminds me how much I /hated/ that annoying guy that said hello and woke you up from your sleep at the begining of your game back when DS was in the chrome webstore....and now he's basically replaced Wilson as my favourite character.

also known as effectively getting 5% less hunger from eating only meaty stews

meatballs and pierogies suck when playing as all characters because there're better things to use for that

very situational x2.5 damage multiplier and x2 work multiplier the character

might sound rude but that just sounds absurd

Can you just let people enjoy things for once?
Also, you're just kind of wrong here, because Warly's penalty goes up to 70% if you keep eating the same thing. That's several times the 5% you said and turns 150 hunger into 45. If you're gonna pull the "um actually, Warly's diet doesn't have to be that varied" card, you could at least mention tall scotch eggs (same hunger as meaty stew) or any other high-hunger dish. Once you've got an above-average tree in your base, you can also throw in fig-stuffed trunk for that same +150 hunger.
But unless you go out of your way to get one of those trees, keep a stock of tallbird eggs, and constantly farm meat (all of which you might not bother with as a normal character anyway), you're more likely to vary your diet just out of necessity, particularly in the earlier stages of a world.

i primarily main maxwell but i also dabble in playing wolfgang and winona

i originally started playing max way before his rework as i thought as a character he was entertaining and his perks were things i saw value in like how he could farm fuel whenever he wanted and didnt go passively insane so i didnt have to think about it when fighting bosses like bq or doing day to day things and easy log and rock farming is really nice
he was no where near optimal outside of farming logs but he did just about everything i wanted from a character

i do like modern max though i just wanted to talk about what originally hooked me as a main

as for wolfgang while i like his quotes i primarily play him because i like fighting and double damage is really helpful for that but since a lot of characters are getting some form of extra dps i have less reason to play him in long term worlds

as for winona ive for the longest time been on the fence about playing her more than once a century since while she has really nice tools i like using (catapults and faster crafting) she just didnt have enough for me to really commit to the bit and play her for an extended period of time which was fixed with the skilltree

while admittedly i wanted more from the skilltree (and i still have gripes with skilltrees in general) her getting teleports, roombas and buffs to both catapults and spotlights was enough for me to give her another shot and ive been really enjoying playing her recently

i do like playing the other characters but these are the 3 ive been playing the most as of late

food memory expires before you need to eat again if you get to full hunger through 2 meaty stews so it's full stats from 1st and 10% less from 2nd, so effectively 5%

I voted Wanda since that's a character I would absolutely pick if I only had to choose favourite. But since the addition of skill trees I had an absolute blast playing Wigfrid as well and did many worlds as her. I main Wanda for my megabase and alway feel handicapped of my teleport convenience when I switch to someone else.

Honourable mentions of characters I also enjoy playing and will gladly pick in new worlds to have fun with friends: Woodie, Wickerbottom, Wortox. I do like WX as well but haven't played him much. I used to play Wendy/Warly with beefalo a lot but that playstyle got a bit boring for me.
