Has anyone thought about this?

Wagstaff is projecting himself into the constant, and has been for a very long time by the looks of it, and at some point in the story he attempts to make a portal into the constant, but from what we have seen it seems like its one way. He used either a successful model or a prototype to banish wx into the constant, with possible motives of a two birds one stone angle to get rid of a problematic machine and to study the constant and wx's interactions with it.

Now this raises a question if Wagstaff isn't within the constant, then who was the person that got dragged into the portal in Winona's cinematic?

Who could be the unnamed and unidentified researcher/builder/employee of Wagstaff? Some one who was trusted enough (or paid enough to keep quiet) to make a portal to another world, or even unfortunate enough to trust Wagstaff to build a potentially faulty portal.

So many potential questions, and we can assume it isn't Wagstaff since we know his method of research, is there a mystery character (more than likely a npc in future) that we have yet to actually meet?

Would love to hear input on this, opinions, and critique welcome and encouraged.

With his projection discovery it is difficult to exactly tell if there are any faults or limits to being a projection. We know he has the ability to interact between worlds but we don't know if this is because of his own research and found better ways to project himself into the constant via his extensive knowledge.

Now, we know Wagstaff disappeared in 1919 as this was established since the dawn of the lore. Several sources claim that he was the one who was yanked into the portal, and this was before the era of Charlie as Charlie still had her personality problems in said cinematic. Why they do not show this in the cinematic is due to Wagstaff not really being set in stone in lore *yet* cinematic-wise and was kept secret. He would later be expanded on in DST, despite his reveal in when Hamlet released.

This is also why his house is put in auction as he was likely deemed deceased 2 years later. Which is where Wilson comes into play in the story of course, winning his house in the auction. The house is also labeled for the Scientifically talented.

Several questions lead into this. If he is, or was in the Constant at one point. Why is he a projection in DS. I personally think his DS-variant is obviously a projection as that is what we see when he is on low hp. But, i think this is between somewhere through 1910 to 1919 before he was captured. This would make a bit of sense somewhat to make it fit within the DS timeline. We know Maxwell that he's full well aware who Wagstaff is, so i wouldn't be surprised if he knew that Wagstaff was tinkering with the Constant, flickering about in his world, and likely getting more and more infuriated. Stealing his inventions or inspired by them. Maxwell has always been quite a grudgeful person, especially if it's muckering in his business or secrets. Wickerbottom, Wolfgang, Wes, Witherstone were people who had previously personaly made them targeted one way or another, even if it's someone like Wolfgang who helped him, he likely had seen too much and was offered a deal.

So, with that in mind it is possible that after much time in trying to find this glitchy old man, Maxwell finally caught him, and took him in the Constant, stopping his Voxola radio business. Wagstaff has had plenty of time to go into the Constant so it's clear he is in no hurry early on. Considering he likely Banishes Wx-78.

Now, last question. If he was indeed yoinked into the Constant, how did he get out. Well, there aren't many possible things to go through here as we don't really know. But there are things that are equally odd like him knowing exactly what and how the Nightmare Throne works for example which could have something to do with it one way or another.

If he did enter the Constant it's possible he's still inside of it. He could just be projecting himself to the more dangerous areas while hiding in a safer area. A base, if you will. Wagstaff is an idle basecamper making us do all the work for him while he just stays by the fire.

The issue with this is that it doesn't follow what is portrayed in Intereference, since we see Wagstaff in the human realm after he (supposedly) got taken in.

For now, the only way I see Wagstaff escaping the Constant is by having some kind of pre-existing backup plan to pull him back out. I suppose he didn't just make a doorway into the Constant without also making a way out. That said, his portal was likely both things and the progress on that was cut short.

It stands out to me that this man can craft a fricking teleporter in DS mostly out of rocks without using any magical components AND KNOWS HOW TO DO IT WITHOUT RESEARCH. Other survivors need to study dark magic, get nightmare fuel, purple gems and living logs to make something half as good and for Wagstaff is just no biggie!

As of now it's definitely come to a point that Wagstaff can go from the real world to the Constant whenever he feels like it. Projector or not. Last couple of times we've seen him he's in no projector mode, as well as creating more than 1 portal, first in the forest, now in a savanna. So he absolutely has the tech to go wherever. I think in Taking root he has managed to get into the Constant, as it appears to work and he is completely physical. This only valids the reason why he's still physical in Scrappy scavengers as well.

That's clearly his brother Bob Wagstaff, who he hired to play the role of Robert Wagstaff in the short Interference so that people wouldn't realize that he's AFK in base while we do all the work.
