I was genuinely surprised. Like i know a lot of people see him as weak, but his downside isnt that much worse than wormwoods, and he has woby and his slingshot, which are both super nice early game.

i like walter conceptually he just needs a little boost to have his woby be as fast as a beef, and his slingshot to be easier to use/cheaper

I'd say the hate comes from the fact his abilities aren't very impactful while his downsides are very much so.

Compare that to Wormwood or Warly who also have impactful downsides but have equally impactful perks. Also before someone mentions it while Wes is a "challenge" character I'd say his downsides simply aren't as impactful as the trio above as his downsides don't have a big impact on your gameplay beyond slowing you down that's not to say he's a easy character however.

Without going into too much detail on Walter as I've done it a ton in the past.

Woby is a worse more expensive beefalo

The slingshot is both very weak and very expensive to maintain

Campfire stories lock you in place to work under specific conditions while being far worse at sanity recovery than a sisturn

The portable tent is okay but not too many people tend to use the sleeping mechanic

People like impactful perks but not only does he not deliver but he comes with impactful downsides.

I mean i am aware of all of this, but my main counterpoint is: yeah, and?

i said he’s weak, and needs a buff. My main complaint about the slingshot isnt the dps, its the expense. Safer gameplay typically goes slower, so its fair to me (though could use a bit more speed)

i mean my main thing is if you play him without his slingshot as a “main weapon” he plays a lot better. Sanity is an impactful downside, but woby being fast makes the early game a super cakewalk. Map is explored faster than any other character so long as you stop occasionally to thwack a spider or two.

So i mean i guess i’ll repeat myself. He’s just kind of weak with interesting enough perks, everything he does is neat but not very effective at what it does.

i would like woby to not only be as fast as a rider beef, i’d like walter to be able to effectively fight from wobyback if invested in (with a melee weapon.

I’d like his slingshot ammo to be cheaper and maybe have more range.

i’d love if walter could carry a second person on woby for transportation purposes.

there’s lots you can do to “fix” walter, but the biggest ones would just be number tweaks.

I was mainly just bringing up while people tend to hate him I do enjoy Walter myself despite all of his flaws that aside though.

The slingshot being safer tends to be more of a illusion than anything else it's nearly unusable in most horde fights, in 1v1 fights outside of bosses mobs are generally safe enough that your generally just as safe fighting them directly, and in boss fights your prolonging the fight so much longer that your actually increasing the amount of danger your in because of increased risk of outside intervention or mistakes from a drawn out battle.

While I don't think the slingshot should be his be all end all weapon the problem is it's pretty horrible as a secondary weapon as well. His secondary rounds range from bad to niche and with other characters getting arguably superior ranged options it just doesn't hold up on either front.

As for being able to use melee weapons on Woby I feel like that undermines the slingshot and Woby's cowardly nature(and would probably be akward to animate). As for making Woby as fast as a rider beef I wouldn't be against it but I feel like what would make a greater impact would be removing her speed decay mechanic and increasing the amount of days she transforms by 1 or 2 days.

I do at the end of it all agree he's very fixable it's just a matter of seeing how they handle him really.
