Cool Tips for Wurt/merms (New Tips for Wanda, Maxwell and Walter synergies Added)

Recommended Posts

Anyone can offer additional tips and i might add on more tips. Made this for fun to try share the best Wurt tactics.

General:

Tip 1: Craftsmerm houses basically make themselves. They provide almost all the main materials needed for them (besides reeds which should be no biggie). Craftsmerms are still really effective and will be more effective than rushing guard merms eary game since you can get them much faster.

Tip 1.5: Wurt is not useless without the king. Normal merms still yield great results.

Tip 2: Merms can carry fish for you. They also still gain loyalty, so you can give them fish to carry, and kill them afterwards to get it back. This is useful for getting resources to make merm stuff early game.

Tip 3: You don't need to live in the swamp. You can transport some swamp turf and make merm houses. Base in swamp if it is a good spot to base, and not just because it is a swamp.

Tip 4: Incase you do not know, you can make merms go to war just like spiders for easy fish and frog legs for yourself and your team. Merm guards also respawn in half a day, so you can get 2 frog legs 2 fish a day from each warrior, so their investment is worth it.

Tip 4.5:  Convert frog legs and other meat into eggs. This can be used for filler for multiple dishes, like dragon pie and jam. (Dont use 3 eggs for jam)

Tip 4.7:  If you have someone to trade with pig king, one merm = 2 gold (you will need to turn frog legs to eggs). You can get TONS of super renewable gold this way. 4 gold a day for merm guards since they respawn so fast. This is a good option for gold you may find useful.

Tip 5:  A fish plus a tophat is the same as a tamo shanter, great for sanity. (Alot of people forget about this)

Tip 6:  A single dead or rotten fish gets rid of the lunar sainity gain. Great for krampus farms where you can not eat morsels to lose sainity.

Tip 7: With Transplanted kelp, you  cannot starve with very little effort. No need for waiting on crock pots, tending farms or fertalising bushes. The only thing stopping you is other team mates or Wurts who also want kelp.

Tip 8: You can easily farm birds using merms since birds are not afraid of them. Befriend some merms, and then fake attack a bird with a ranged weapon. The merm will kill it, costing 0 resources. "Why not just use the boomerang?" Because this costs no resource upkeep to do.

Tip 9: As any character, Merm mini bases are a great place to put your personal stuff since thieves will not want to explore in their.

Merm Guards:

Tip 1: Having 6 merm guards follow you at all times is extremely efficent. It costs so litle to feed them, and they are so powerful. They will destroy daily dangers, and help with handy work like stone fruit cracking.

Wood Chopping and Marble Mining:

Tip 1: What is the best way to chop wood and mine marble as Wurt? First, move your workers into the middle of a clump of trees, and then set them to work. This way they will not push into each other, and will branch out from the middle and split up. This is a must know for Wurt.

Tip 2:  You don't have to dig up stumps. Planting more trees to compensate is much faster for Wurt. You or someone else can shovel the stumps later if they are looking for something to do or extra wood.

Tip 3: A lazy forager is really useful since you can dig up stumps while collecting items for max efficency and speed available for Wurt.

Summer:

Tip 1:  Someone else got ice chester and you want a solution to Summer? Wetness: (Any character can but Wurt has 0 downsides and access to drowning)

▪Step 1: Get a fashion melon or ice cube hat.

▪Step 2: Get max wetness by jumping into water using a plank, or other methods.

▪Step 3: Now your wetness wont fall below 80 wetness, allowing you to stay immune to heat for as long as your hat exists. But beware, going near fire or furnaces will reduce wetness. They both will slowly gain wetness, but will have a cap so you will need to re-apply wetness. The ice hat however is able to get you wet enough to not need to jump into water again.

▪Activating rain works too.

Tip 2: Mosquito sacks lying around in the swamp can be turned into waterballoons. This will keep you cool in some emergency situations.

Winter:

Tip 1:  Don't want to farm for heals? Here are two good options for all seasons:

▪Blue mushrooms. Visit the blue mushroom biome in the caves for stacks of mushrooms. Most effective in Winter with longer nights, which is also when you will struggle with heals the most.

▪Healing salves. Really underrated, mine a stonefruit bush for stone and fruit. Burn the fruit for ash and combine it with a gland for a non-spoiling healer.

Tip 2: Merms spawn in Winter, and at the same rate as normal. You just need to set the house on fire to get them out. After that, they stay out forever until they die. Remember to put it out with a flingo or watering can.

Spring:

Tip 1: You can use Sun fish to be immune to rain. Sadly, thermal stones barely work because of really weird mechanics.

Tip 2: Frogs are neutral to Wurt and anyone wearing a disguise. This is useful for frog rain, since it also allows you to fight with frogs in combat. For example, safely fighting dragonfly along with frogs as backup.

Character Synergies: (Surprisingly Wurt has so many. I will add more to this section when i feel like it)

Warly:

Tip 1: Fish is greatly useful in many Warly recipes. Make his dreams come true.

Tip 2:  Make others immune to rain using Warly. 2 merms = 1 cordon Bleu.

Wormwood:

Tip 1: Wormwood can help farm Wurt loads of great farm foods.

Tip 2: The merm king gives a significant amount of seeds. Wormwood can plant all these as wild seeds and everyone can profit so much from king trading.

Tip 3: This is outclassed by growth formula, but spoiled fish can help wormwood sustain bloom.

Wickerbottom (and Maxwell for some since he can read books):

Tip 1: The merm king gives a significant amount of seeds. Use this for growth books. Wickerbottom just like wormwood can provide Wurt with tons of food too.

Tip 2: Wurt has infinite sainity manipulation with Wickerbottom's books and bookshelf by reading them, and yes it is broken op. Easily go from insane to sane, or sane to insane really fast.

Tip 3: Wickerbottom's fish farm can provide Wurt with infinite fish to trade with the king for infinite gold, tentacle spots and other loots. Remember to use a strident to harvest the fish.

Tip 4: Wickerbottom can use her fish book in the ocean to easily spawn ice breams and sun fish for Wurt, saving so much time and making it ridicously easy.

Tip 5: Wurt can farm Wickerbottom tentacle spots for on tentacles, although very niche because of the new bookshelf. Wickerbottom can farm Wurt spots using On Tentacles too, though this is not reccomended due to spawned tentacles having a much lower chance for spots.

Tip 6: Wurt can easily provide Wickerbottom with surf n turf, her favourite food. This is useful until she makes her fish farm.

Tip 7: The resource growing book has great synergy with Wurt who can chop those trees down. These two characters can mass farm every resource possible.

Overall, Wickerbottom is an amazing synergy with Wurt and both ends benifit well.

Maxwell:

Tip 1: Merms can take hits for Maxwell's puppets.

Tip 2: Maxwell plus Wurt is the fastest way to farm wood in the game. Merms quickly chop the trees and quickly kill tree guards, Shadow workers shovel stumps and pick up items. Keep in mind picking up wood while farming with bearger at the same time is an unrealistic expectation and still leaves behind tree guards, so this is the fastest you can chop wood.

Tip 3: Maxwell can recruit regular merms with a merm disguise. They are weaker in combat against treeguards and will need more food, but you can achieve a very similar result to the tip above.

Tip 4: Maxwell can read books too, so alot of Wickerbottom tips apply to him too.

Walter: If you want Walter to be the best he can be, you need a Wurt on your team.

Tip 1: Walter's biggest problem when obtaining marble rounds independantly is that he has no good way to mine marble shrubs efficently, especially early on. Use a merm disguise and recruit merms to mine marble without having to spend ages mining, or asking anyone else for help.

Tip 2: Walter is great with merms on his side if you want to use the slingshot, merms distract enemies and tank while you shoot from range safely. He can farm them for gold rounds too by trading their guts to the pig king.

Even though it is just a few tips, these make a major difference in Walter's quality of life.

Wanda:

Tip 1: Turn spoiled fish into bone shards for your clocks.

Tip 2: Wanda can easily farm merms, even faster, cheaper, easier and simpler than Wurt can. Make a few walls between yourself and a Wurt base to stop merms from being able to kill you. You can drop bait in it to lure merms next to the box. Then, aggro a merm and hold f until they all die. They can't hit you, but you can hit them.

As a bonus, you can also set up a teleporter in this kill box to easily farm merms at any time from anywhere in the world. If you set another backtrek watch at your location before you teleport to the merms, you can teleport right back. Make sure you have clockmaker tools to unlink the clock.

1. Set the teleporter up in the box.

2. When you need fish, teleport to the box.

3. Aggro a merm and hold f to kill them all.

4. Make a gate to go out and pick the resources. Lazy forager can help too.

5. Use your other back trek watch to teleport back to where you were. Remember you can unlink it to link it somewhere else by deconstructing it with clock maker tools.

Presto, you turned a merm base into what is basically a portable food farm.

The walls are 7 by 7. The gates in the middles are so you don't accidently get too close to the merms and get hurt. You can replace the normal merms with merm guards since they respawn in half a day, however regular merms don't need a king and are easier to mass produce, but it is likely you will just set this up in the middle of a Wurt base (hopefully with permission) so it wont be a problem. Use what suits you. I reccomend making the houses closer to the wall for easier times aggroing the merms.

Why use it over pigs and bunnies?

Merms are the most useful of these three. They give the most food. Wanda does not really need pig skin for long since she often uses dreadstone or other armor, however it is great to use this set up in a pig farm anyway to farm it for others, or on full moons.

Making this setup for all three of these mobs is useful since it is really easy to make.

Wurt is immune to losing tool grip in wetness which makes her great for spring and caves gameplay.

StarSky also counts as a “Pet Fish” so all you need is that and a top hat to practically live in caves as Wurt.

Never ever ever EVER build the Royal Tapestry, once you do this… all Merms become passive- You don’t want that… keep them aggressive & defensive.

Oh and one more thing.. any boss is as good as Dead when you build a personal army of 300-400 Merms near its base.

(any non-Wurts will need clever disguise or will meet a fast death)

Bad idea because you miss out on the extreme power and efficency of guard merms... which i will discuss tommorow.

-You can get 2-3 more hits on Moose/Goose esier than other characters. The strong grip will make you not drop your weapon during that one attack.
-You can transform bull kelp into ratatouille. It loses hunger value, but lasts longer. Personal preference mostly, with the benefit of recovering a reasonable amount of freshness.
-Potatoes are in-season during winter.

  • Merms are bad against AoE bosses and in the ruins, they are however great harvesters. Since all cave bosses have AoE, there is little point in having a king down there - use Craftsmerm Houses to get your personal guard and miners down there, don't bother with anything else.
  • Moon Quay island is something that's worth hitting early on as Wurt, banana dishes are absolutely amazing for her, as is turning to Wonkey, since that allows you to trade with the pig king, finally cashing in all your hard-earned Frazzled Wires.
  • A fish in the inventory heals just about as much sanity in 5 minutes as a blue cap eats up.
  • Durians are actually useful, you can make an absolutely ridiculous farm with those, pumpkin and dragonfruit... except you need to grow things during multiple seasons: 6 pumpkins per tile during autumn or winter, 3 dragonfruit and 3 durians per tile during spring. This setup is completely nutrient neutral, and assuming you've got common sense and are growing giants, it gives you about 8200 hunger during a single year, ~109 days worth of food. It can be a bit redundant however, since...
  • Kelp regrow every 3 days, and 6 kelp fills one day's worth of hunger, while you can easily get 30-40 Bull Kelp Stalks just on the main Lunar Island and Pearls Island, so they can basically cover all your hunger needs, forever. Kinda painful to harvest, except you can just bunch it all up and use the shadow reaper to instantly reap all of them at once.

This is false. They are still powerful against them. Worst case scenario against cc, you deal lots of bonus damage and have loads of fish and frog legs. They can survive until last phase.

Merm guards are amazing for getting a lot of junk from merm king like trinkets for gold or tentacle spots, as merms drop fish.

Just tame 1 merm and punch another merm to cause a civil war, walk away, come back and haul the fish over to the king

(Unfortunately most of the merm king's trades suck)

CC is a weird example in this regard, P1 is easy, P2 can be brute forced with enough merms, though they'll still probably die by P3. You also already have the merms on the surface, so why not?

For cave bosses, however, building a Royal Tapestry and a bunch of Merm Flort-ifications is a huge waste of time, and even if you want to use minions, there are better ways - AG and the Nightmare Werepig are easy enough, while you can just get a horde of Rock Lobsters for AFW.

i think Maxwell helps Wurt a bit.

maxwells farming limiter (specially) is that he cannot have infinite shadow servants.

Wurts limiter is the fact that she has to deal with stumps.

being able to have the shadows focus mostly on (basically free) stump cleanup, while having a merm horde bulldoze trees.

I was thinking of doing a character synergy section (she actually has tons) and this was an exact thing i was going to add.

Wurt also kills tree gaurds really fast.

You don't have to btw, stumps disappear in 50 days iirc. It's much faster to just ignore them and continue clear-cutting elsewhere, and if you want healing salves, taking a torch to one will quickly clear what remains of that forest, giving you a bunch of ash.

Another great thing about kelp that's worth mentioning is that it can be dried.

Kelp dries in just 2 minutes, and dried kelp restores 10 sanity, which can be handy at times.

100 merm guards can kill klaus despite him enraging in the last phase. (Probally less but ik my 100 merms can do it)

You can also trap the deer with fossils and such and kill him by his lonesome.

Fun fact: before the merms got some self-preservation instincts around the time of WX-78 rework, you could absolutely demolish Klaus with merms, they didn't care if they got hit by the deer, they only concentrated on what you hit last. I kinda miss those times.

I've been playing for Wurt for a very long time, but honestly I didn't notice it

How I wish that in her skill tree, merms learned how to dig stumps. Even if it's a different kind of merman

I like basing in frog ponds as a Wurt. Extra day protection because they are not accressive towards Wurt but will deal with other mobs + ponds are nearby for fishing. And everyone is afraid of mermes bases anyway so we leave the rest of the world to assimilate while using the place nobody use anyways.

One thing i loved from her wetness inmunity was cleaning the ruins in spring/winter

I made a bundle with scorchfish bring a morning star and you wont suffer from the rain while you are doing more damage and wasting less resources for weapons since morning stars last really long and have higher dps than dark swords

You can even take advantage of the light that morning star gives to wear head slot armor which opens the possibility of using both pieces of dreadstone armor so they will repair fast enough to keep them with high durability making the process of cleaning the ruins even cheaper

As for character synergies, Wigfrid and Wurt are one the truly terrifying ones:

  • Completely different diets, the only thing Wigfrid ever needs vegetables for is Pierogi
  • Wigfrid can trade with PK, Wurt can farm damn near infinite rocks, which means...
  • Pretty much infinite Battle Helm. You haven't seen fear in a boss's eye until you ran it over with 20 merms wearing helmets, I'm guessing that could take on even P2 CC, aka Merm Blender 3000.

Added new tips. I think Wanda players will really enjoy the portable Merm farm. You can do the same with pigs and bunnies but merms are much nore useful for Wanda. (She does not really need pig skin, and merms give much more food than bunnies and pigs)
