To be fair. We have had 4 years of new characters + reworks, and are starting probably another 2 years of that.

Even if most of them are good, one cant ignore that many parts of the world: ocean, caves, moon quay, ruins, and the current riff arc to an extent need the most focus for the game to improve and a few random chip in updates like the frostjaw and werepig are not enough and don't fix the main problems with these things.

Obviously we have started skill trees which need to be finished, but ignoring that what would you prefer?

I'm tired of these character updates, even hate them, wish developers would stop them once they've finished the skilltrees for everyone.

I really hope they could "fix" some of the old good content, fix those small, scattered problems that affect the game experience -- some that were already there, some that were broken by later updates -- don't need to replaced with something new like rework, just a little thought and a line or two of code change.

I generally love skill trees in any game. But ugh.. I really wish they'd take a lower priorty for the foreseeable future, even if my fave char hasn't gotten hers yet. Same with the holiday updates, taking up a lot of space. I do appreciate that they're still adding so much for DST. But the priority has become a bit tired.

The thing is I feel like you're never done balancing characters. Even if its not purely about balance. The game itself just evolves and thus former character reworks become outdated. We were just done with the updates and now boom, we basically need another. It's an endless cycle. Kind of neglecting what the game really needs, I feel.

To me the most important thing atm, would be updating the old boring biomes, on the surface and caves.
Hamlet and even Shipwrecked to a lesser degree feel much more vibrant, and alive.

DST is just like an empty wasteland, it feels like a post apocalyptic world. I mean maybe it is... since we're post the Anicents collapse, but that's besides the point. The Hamlet world is also a post civilizational downfall with ruins and long forgotten wars, but it still feels alive and vibrant.

Please just more biome updates.

I feel like another route could be the characters they messed up in the original reworks like Willow and Winona could have got second reworks, then the ones that are ok are left as be. I am still grateful with what we are getting.

I wouldn't mind them doing little chips to the characters, for example adding a new wx circuit as a small bonus in an update, or adding a new winona craft as a smaller part of a world update.

As a character enjoyer, I'm really excited to see what the next year brings to the survivors like Walter and Winona, but I also really want some more world content, so I'll say a balance of both is good. Hopefully Caves and Ocean in particular get some love. Honestly I'm really hoping someday we'll get a big update to world gen, that would make different worlds more... different. Currently there's just not that much variety in world gen from world to world, imho, to the point where messed up world gen is a pleasure to see. I also think that if the alternative resources(twiggy trees, juicy berries and geckos) get reworked and expanded upon, it could help a ton in making worlds feel more fresh and unique. I think it's a great concept, really, it's just that it's not implemented the best right now. Except for Juicy Berries. I think they're a good example of this mechanic done right, as they have a number of advantages and disadvantages when compared to regular Berry Bushes, which makes both different, yet equally valid. Meanwhile, while twiggy trees and grass geckos do have some advantages over tufts and saplings, they aren't balanced quite as well, and it's much easier to get gecks and trees in a world with classic resources, than the opposite. Twiggy trees in particular will just show up in your world regardless and then can be easily multiplied. On the other hand, naturally spawned gecks are quite likely to die out, especially when spawned near tall birds! (what I would suggest for grass gecks is for the grass gecko worlds to generate with some grass gecko spawners, like grass gecko dens or something, also perhaps some QoL changes for handling gecks, even something as simple as being able to trap em for easier transportation).

I think the game needs a major re-org to make space and make sense for new content.

The old DST was quite complete by itself. With new stuff introduced, inevitably, stuff overlaps and becomes repetitive/substituted in some way.

Food system, weapon/gear system, beefalo system, etc should be adjusted or balanced along with character skill tree and post-cc content.

Farming system, sail system, biome growth design, etc, should be refined based on player's feedback.

New mechanics need to be polished.

I hope they finish skill trees ASAP so they can focus on world updates, but it would be a disaster if they only do character updates, so balance of both it is.

I think the idea of rift has great potential to bring new challenges and new biomes that are not presented in the beginning of the world. In the past whenever Klei adds a new item/biome, if it is useful and worth the trouble, people will find a way to rush it in the first autumn. If it is not people would simply ignore it entirely. As such Klei cannot make these new stuff too attractive. That’s the reason why the ocean biomes still seem boring, because there are not many resources and awards on the sea that we really need. The idea of the rift allows overpowered stuff to exist without breaking the beginning of the world, and I believe a lot of room for adding new places and new stuff in the empty void of water we currently have.

Originally I figured that AFTER the reworks ended they would focus on more actual core game content that all characters and not just the specific one your currently playing as, could benefit from and experience.

But then Skill trees were Added.

I was under the impression that since DST is now a fairly old game (2015) that Klei would save any huge new ideas (such as turning Willow into a full blown fire mage) for a brand new Dont Starve game made in 2024.

However the fact that they’re continuing to add and develop character reworks & skill trees for DST, gives me a tiny bit of hope that instead of releasing a brand new 2024 Dont Starve Game, Klei instead has plans to extend the life of DST for many more years to come.

Because yeah I’m no game designer, but if I was, I sure as heck wouldn’t update my game to make people more invested in the characters in that game, if I had no plans of updating the rest of the game alongside those characters to extend the other (currently lacking) areas of the game.

There should be no excuse why the ocean that was added to the game in 2019 is still almost as empty as it was back then.

But sadly there is an excuse.. Reworks, Re-Reworks & Skill Trees which are just more Reworks in disguise.

I wish that Klei would just include the character updates with the content that necessitates them. Like Wolfgang's planar damage problem should've been fixed in the planar damage update. I'm not sure if Klei just doesn't anticipate these consequences from their updates or what, but I feel like these situations are avoidable somewhat.
