I have learned that if it can be done it will. The difference is, that cannon method you mentioned is actually good and effective. You can gain infinite seconds of invincability with the snurtle shell. In the case of brightshades, you can just either use meat effigy, have a friend res you away from the brightshade's reach, or leave your life amulet on the ground out of the brightshade's reach before fighting it.
