PerJacob
The new beta and things in it got me thinking about the lore of the new content arc. So currently we have two sides competing against each other with two key players being Charlie and Wagstaff. We can kinda guess their goals thanks to the cinematics - Charlie wants to fix the ancient gateway and Wagstaff is trying to build a working portal that doesn’t explode (I would assume). But the problem is that Wagstaff is not Alter’s ally, which leaves us in the dark when it comes to Alter’s endgoal. The entire Return of Them arc focused on the Moon manipulating survivors to reunite the altars so it could wake up. So that brings us to brightshade gestalts. Creatures made from them just attack things on sight without doing much else. Is Alter doing all of this just to conquer new land or is something more going on here that we don't know about. And even then, there are many other worlds in the constant. What makes this one so special? Well thank you for your time and feel free to make your theories. Gashzer
The question is. Are wagstaff and charlie the chess players moving pieces around the board or are they just pawns themselves? Its not 100% clear right now which is the case. I believe charlie is in abit more of the know about both lunar and shadow sides. As she has observed altar through the nightmare torch and has explored the archive an such. Wagstaff however is clearly just trying to harness the power of the moon to alters disagreement (summoning celestial champion to wreck his machine). I feel both wagstaff and charlie are simply trying to harness power from the 2 gods in their own ways and not aligned with either god per say.
Cassielu
I don't think Alter is actively invading the world, and neither are Shadow Eye Thingy (damn, when we gonna get its real name? Not being able to find a proper name is really annoying.), they almost didn't do anything subjective for now. It seems premature to discuss their purpose. All we've got so far seem just a bit of interdimensional species invasion and environmental pollution. Charlie and Wagstaff and their portals are enough to responsible for what's happened now in this arc. Portal break fabric and creates rift, things from other planes enter our reality. Over. Clear and easy to understand also verify what AF said. Edited October 16 by Cassielu
Valase
2 hours ago, PerJacob said: The entire Return of Them arc focused on the Moon manipulating survivors to reunite the altars so it could wake up. And once it wakes up, the constant starts to get more infected by it (moonstorms). This is when Wagstaff comes to play, as he tries to harvest the moonstorm and altars powers to apparently build a portal, but once it is built and "working" the moon sends the Celestial champion to stop it. 2 hours ago, PerJacob said: So that brings us to brightshade gestalts. This is a good question.
Paxtonnnn
I imagine the moonstorms might've been Alter's goal, but Wagstaff ruined it by taking advantage of the opportunity and weakening Alter
JustAFlower
My theory on the moon and stuff : There is a quote of Wagstaff in DS "...Its military applications are endless !" when inspecting a Shadow Sword so Wagstaff is trying to exploit the power of the resources in the constant. You first see Wagstaff when Moonstorms show up, he's studying it. If you notice, Brightshades and Gestalts are not actually "physical" they are in our dreams and they make you asleep (or damage you THROUGH the armor), they are trying to possess something to become physical. These Brightshades can turn a body into an abomination, the power is infinite. And that's what I think Wagstaff is trying to do, he is trying to get an actual Lunar energy, a physical one, without any possession involved. He is changing places in the constant to idk maybe get the perfect spot to get some of this lunar energy. An enlightened crown managed to create rifts thanks to Wagstaff, so I think he is getting deeper into this Touchable Lunar Stuff. The portal he is trying to make ? A way to get to the moon ? I'm not sure about this part. My theory on Bigchin (Maxwell) and Charlie : I think that Charlie wants Maxwell to use a spell of his codes umbra to reactivate the ancient gateway or make some shadows mad. That's the only thing I can think of. Will he actually pull the shadow creature that made the earthquake in san francisco for help :O ??
Retepeter
I feel like wagstaff wants to be a world famous inventor. Charlie is fused with Cyclum and us controlled by Them on the nightmare throne, otherwise she's trying to leave. I don't think we'll know Their true intentions ever but it seems like they wanna torture the survivors as much as They can, possibly escape the constant and torture the real world too but that's not known
