Sharing thought about skill trees

Recommended Posts

Wilson rework topic is long behind us but I wanted to just share it.

Skill trees done well are not skills locked for no particular reason.

Those exist to prevent you from smashing the odds into the ground early game.
Let's say there's a game that utilizes cooldown/stamina dodge mechanic yet it's locked behind skill tree. Not always dodging is best way to avoid attacks, sometimes you can just walk out of the way preserving stamina or not wasting the dodge for it to go on cooldown. The stage before you earn the dodge skill serves the purpose of you learning that. Each time you advance you earn skill that would make previous challenge laughable and makes future one possible. That's when having locked skills makes sense.

Wilson's skills maybe except ones on the right side are locked for no interesting reason.

Once you unlock Wilson’s skills they remain unlocked even in newly started worlds, so it’s like you have to play him as a complete noob one time first, then after that he retains all his perks in future sessions.

If Klei wants to give every character a skill tree I would “Prefer” they do it on a brand new game designed for PS5, & Xbox Series X/S, & the Switch 2.

The skill tree sucks. I think they saw that a lot of people wanted Wilson to stay the character that does nothing, so they implemented a skill tree to allow you to "choose to keep him bland". But everything in it is so boring & underwhelming. The rework would have honestly just been better if they gave him every single thing in his trees unlocked default and concurrently, then instead of choosing to not invest in skills you choose to not craft things with alchemy (the other perks are inconsequential). I'm still not a fan of that, but it's better than encouraging Wilsons to just sit AFK at base (when they already did that so much) so that they can make these bland choices on which skills they want in a system that made the HUD worse for everyone for no real reason.

P.S. The skill tree is account based instead of world based so I don't even know why you need to idle to unlock it in the first place.

Wilson rework is a joke.

Literally all I gained from rework is extra space for my pierogies and blue mushrooms to hide.

Beard perks are usless, same with torch.

Transmutation seemed intresting but has been proven quite usless in almost every situation. It only helped me when I joined dedicated server with all resources already scavanged. I did managed to make some flints out of rocks, but look, some bird dropped me flint for free.
