Ocean Advice for Newbies?

Recommended Posts

A rather different kind of advice here, mainly for exploring: except for the lunar island, there is no sure way of knowing the location of anything on the ocean just by looking at your surroundings. So once you get more comfortable with sailing, try to find patterns that show you where certain stuff won't be, because even though people might tell you otherwise, you can never know in advance where stuff will be on the ocean.

Use oars. Definitely not the wooden ones for long though.
Always build these 3 strucutres:

  • firepit (for light and heat)
  • crock pot
  • lightning rod (i always build it to prevent forgetting to build it in spring)
  • (endothermic firepit if you want to sail in summer)

Thanks for the advice, all! We opted to start with one sail and a few oars to start with and made sure we had plenty of backup everything. I ended up altering my setup a bit to reflect ya'll's advice. I was really proud of the boat setup too. It felt like the first time I "built" something in the game since I tend to set up my bases as I go. So we set sail!

...and immediately realized we had disembarked into an inescapable bay area with no connection to the larger ocean lol.

We'll keep revisiting, but honestly it was a good mental exercise to put it all together and sail around for a bit. Especially once we knew we were going to rollback anyway and just started bumping into stuff willy-nilly to get a hang of it.

This may just be a personal problem for me but sadly I just don’t think there’s enough out there IN the ocean to validate going sailing.

I mean sure Lunar Island is fantastic it’s a pretty large landmass with lots of funky resources and several new mobs.

But everything else is so uhm how do I put this.. “Bite-Sized?” That it just feels like a waste of time.

before I go off on some long rant let me explain- The size of the WaterLogged Biome & Moon Quay are SMALLER than a standard empty Swamp biome- and that deeply annoys me to the point that I just can’t enjoy DSTs Ocean.

That Said, I loved Shipwrecked, and I loved Hamlet and BOTH had sailing elements.. it’s just a shame I was expecting more Lunar Island sized updates, and everything since then has been so Bite-Sized.

Using default settings, a world would only contain these contents:

  • Lunar Island, Pearl's Island, Moon Quay
  • 3 Waterlogged biome
  • Some salt formation and barnacles
  • Malbotross shoals
  • Rest of it is just sea stacks

Just generate a world with sea stacks turned off and reveal the entire map and you would instantly realise how empty the ocean is.

I do this a lot.  I have a whole crafting bar of things that I know are going to be useful at some point, either to have pre-crafted or to remind me the material requirements.
