That's a good idea. But secretly deep down, I'm hoping cannon can be made into a portable secondary weapon instead of a static structure. So I wouldn't consider your suggestion "better". I hope shooting cannon in a different location doesn't require a new cannon, but only requires extra cannon balls. But for the explicit part of the op, this is a great solution that I think Klei should definitely implement. You can shoot the Cannon from different directions already, also isn't this why the Rudder was added in the first place?
