AugyBear
With all the awesome changes we've seen to the ocean in recent patches, I have been looking at doing a challenge run where the goal is to survive as long as possible while basing exclusively on the ocean. (i.e. craft an axe, chop enough logs to make a Think Tank and a Boat Kit, and set off for adventure. No returning to land) To survive in DST, you need the following: Light Hunger/Health/Sanity Warmth Cooling Some way to fight off persistent mobs We can get Logs, Grass, Twigs, Monster Meat, Silk, Spider Glands, Figs, Fish, and Leafy Meat from the Waterlogged biome. Kelp and Barnacles are often readily accessible nearby, as well as Rocks, Salt, and Cookie Cutters. This covers the overwhelming majority of resources necessary for survival. We can craft Fire Pits to provide light and keep warm in Winter, fish, hunt, and gather for food, and splash around/hang out under the tree canopy to keep cool in Summer. My issue is that I have not yet thought of a way to reliably get flint to make tools while out on the water. being able to craft a Razor, Spears, and Pickaxes would be critical for this challenge, so this is my last major hurdle. Does anybody know of a way to reliably get flint out on the water? The Sunken Chest loot table doesn't include Flint, and all the mine-ables on the ocean provide only rocks, as far as I can tell. EDIT: I just realized you can craft a disposable Grass Raft and use it to ram down Sea Stacks to get rocks, so "mining" the rocks isn't a requirement. The only issue would be getting a weapon to fight mobs. Iino
If you plan on making a think tank you would need rocks and gold, which unless you deliberately avoid mining you will most likely get them from bolders, which should give you enough flint for a razor. As for the weapon, you could always play Woodie and just turn into moose to fight when needed, plus Lucy does about walking stick damage which should be enough to kill waterlogged spiders if you can kite well. Hope this helped! Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/142076-challenge-life-on-the-ocean/#findComment-1588380 Share on other sites

I was thinking Webber, since Webber can befriend the Sea Striders and use them to protect from hound waves, but Woodie sounds even better with Moose mode and Lucy! Additionally, Wendy has Abby that stunlocks a group of enemies, which you probablly would want for dealing with pirate raids. Speaking of, pirate raids will turn any character you choose into Wonkey evetually so it doesn't matter much who you pick if you plan on doing this for more than a year. The prime mate will drop some good loot and a battle paddle in the meantime though. I did way too much research into this for something so niche lol, maybe this idea will be more fun once the ocean content is more fully fleshed out. DarkPulse91
As someone who lives out at sea normally... I cant really say I used flint much at all, If i need tools I'll use gold ones, and even then its only the pickaxe, and I never need a thermal stone because of the thermal fish. and as for weapons, Abigail is the best hands down, but you could technically get the trident without ever using flint. But if you truely never want to touch land, then dark swords may be difficult to get for that, but the gems come from sunken chests Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/142076-challenge-life-on-the-ocean/#findComment-1588720 Share on other sites
abrocator
Make a mod that applies the Woodlegs land sanity drain to the character that you're playing. Staying at sea forever isn't quite as viable as things like caves-forever yet.
