Shouldnt the “Character Items” filter be named “Survivor Items” instead?

On the uniformisation of unique crafting tabs

  1. 1. Are you in favor of the new uniformisation of survivor specific crafting tabs, both in icons and filter naming?

    • Yes, the uniformisation increases readability across the board.

    • No, unique icons and tab names were an important part of the survivors identity and what made them unique.

  2. 2. If the uniformisation is to be the new normal, which naming do you think is more fitting for DST?

Minor thing, but I always liked how the playable characters in dst were uniquely called “survivors”.

Doing away with the unique tab names like “ectoherbology” and “balloonomancy” (and the icons) only to replace it with something as generic and non-dst as “character items” feels like a big loss imo.

What initially kept me interested in DST was that instead of generic classes with fill-in characters DST had a roster of unique survivors that had their own distinct personalities and ways of relating to the game world, as expressed in unique crafting tab names etc when applicable.

While I can understand the argument for uniformisation with the way “character filters” are handled now, both in naming and generic head icon, I think this was a really big departure from something quintessentially DS(T).. :crushed:

I want the old art and names back. Maybe if a character doesn't have any items they could just use a crying head icon for the empty tab to signify how upset they are over having no items.

I do miss the custom tab names. Ectoherbology, Green Thumb, Engineering, Books, Seasonings, etc were all applicable to the characters and with them gone, replaced with "Character Items", kinda loses a bit of what makes that character unique and doesn't really explain what their items are. "Character Items" should be replaced with that character's specific tab unless you are playing in freecrafting.

Edit: In hindsight, it would be pretty tedious to do that for every character seeing as not every character had their own tab. Instead, having a specific headline such as "Green Thumb" in that specific character tab could be an alternative solution.

There is the small problem of characters having extra things which weren't in their tabs originally; Walter's Camper's Tent wouldn't fit in his slingshot ammo tab, or Wigfrid's spear and helmet wouldn't fit in her stagecraft tab.

In Wigfrid’s case her spear and helmet would’ve fit in seamlessly under “stagecraft” since we know from her animated short that her spear and helmet are in fact stage props.

Walter seems to be the outlier when it comes to survivors who have their own tab but also crafts in other tabs (wurt, Woodie don’t have own tab but do have unique crafts for example).

if the desire was there this could’ve very easily been resolved I think  with a new Boy Scouts related title for his filter and icon since I’m pretty sure the new head icons are all newly made as well anyway.

but obviously the desire wasn’t there because they went for a uniform approach across the board (which definitely has its own merits, I’m not denying that).

This thread is about if that approach was good or did it sacrifice too much uniqueness and potential survivor identity-building.

Any outliers like Walter, Wurt, Woodie could’ve been easily resolved (if uniqueness and survivor identity-building is desired) since it’s just about a short title and tiny icon (again, new icons were made anyway but instead of unique visuals related to the survivor and their crafts, as was tradition for DS since Wickerbottom’s tab, they opted for portraits).
