Prototypes?

In the game, when we first build an artifact with "research labs", the word "prototype" appears. But shouldn't a prototype be a preliminary version? Usually a prototype is followed by better versions of an artifact, so that there is progress, handwork after handwork.
When we create a "prototype" maybe its durability should be reduced, let's say by 50%? This is after all the first time we try to make a new object!
At the same time, after several times that we build the same object (10? 100?) We could get better versions, with more durability or more efficiency.
As they say, practice makes perfect.
