But what about an optional realism mode where the dupes (you) can only see the first material, and have to dig it to see the one behind it, and so on. A more challenging and claustrophobic mode, that you can hit a water reservoir and mess your colony for a bit. So you must take counter measures along with your digging. A remote sensing technology that would allow you to reveal a section of unexplored map.
