Personally, I thought that the video that was released by Klei today about Wes was a revolution in terms of character development, and has removed all doubts and criticisms I previously had with the writers over at Klei. It was astounding the level of depth they were able to put into the character, and, not even mentioning, the character does not speak. I can still remember I had to manually close my mouth 15 minutes after watching it for the first time, because it had dropped my jaw, and it had kept it there. Seriously, bravo, Klei. Bravo.

The artistry of the animation was nothing short of absolutely stunning, and while I could go on for years about the brilliant details, (For example, the trees in the animation were a greenish color, which highly resembles the trees of the game Don't Starve Together, showing the hidden connections and beautiful metaphorical meaning of the deliberate choice) I am however not an artist and thus, according to various sources, do not have the correct privilege to talk on such matters. However, I am an Author. So I can, and will, comment on that, in the various ways that I can.

The short opens showing Wilson, the token "Poster Boy" of the franchise, but more importantly, it shows him alone. This contrasts greatly with the name of the series, "Don't Starve Together". As the scene moves around, we can see several dark areas on the screen, from the night sky itself, all the way to the dark trees holding various monstrous gazes from beyond. It then transitions to show Wilson be in a low part of the screen, contrasted by the literal literal Giant that is the Bearger, who extinguishes Wilson's flame with his roar, filling the entire scene with darkness.

Not even a moment later, Wilson is saved by a divine distraction, a bright red balloon clashing as violently as a balloon can against Bearger's head, causing both Wilson and the Bearger to turn their attention to elsewhere.

This is the part I want to talk about because this is the part that has Wes, the character with the richest meaning behind their motives in this animation, and quite frankly after this was released, the entire franchise as a whole. The animation is suddenly filled with a bright, golden color, a color typically delegated to Divine or Powerful entities, as Wes bursts onto the scene, a flurry of bright colors that are unique to him accompanying his triumphant appearance on the scene! Knowing the ending of the short, we know that this is nothing but a fantasy in the mind of Wes himself, but the confidence shown in Wes' face along with the symbolism of the scene shows how he views himself - A divine protector sent to this place to care and defend for those that cannot do so for themselves - and note that he is alone. This could support my long-running theory that Wes views himself as the lone support for the survivors, and shows a level of care and patience that is almost bewildering given the overall environment of the world around him; also implying that Wes thrusts a lot of unneeded pressure upon himself to keep up the role, meaning that this could feed into my longer-runninger theory that Wes has clinical depression. An incredibly bold move for Klei to create a main protagonist with such detail!

All is going well for Wes, who is valiantly combating the beast in front of him, protecting Wilson, when Bearger destroys not only Wes' balloon mech, but his dreams. Another deafening roar from the creature causes Wes to wake up, which as previously established, has been shown to extinguish the light of campfires. This could be a deliberate choice to show that Bearger's roar is extinguishing the light of Wes' greatest hope and desire, to finally be able to look out for and defend his friends. It ends finally with that beautiful shot of our protagonist looking around before fading to black. After doing this it is implied Wes is getting up to eat the entire camp's food supply and then not refuel the fling-o-matics while being the only one at the base.

This truly was beautiful. After thinking about the video for hours, I realized just one viewing of it wasn't enough. I quickly ran back to my computer, where I started watching it, and have been watching it, on repeat for several hours now. I have had it accompanying my writing the entire time. I cannot state enough how blown away I was by it. Years of my doubts- Wigfrid's questionable newer voice lines, only 2/5(6?) character refresh videos showing how they arrived at The Constant, Moon content's appearance/functionality being drastically different from implications/intentions, but this video here has made me realize how idiotic and near-sighted I was. I was only looking at the small things, nitpicking, when I failed to realize what really mattered. Wes.

This moves my post into the final point I want to make - A call to action. After seeing this, I realized that no other video Klei will ever make is going to match up to this one. They have quite literally perfected the artform. That is why I propose that for every new update or trailer for the game, this video is re-uploaded onto their YouTube channel instead. In fact, remove all other videos and replace them with this. Nobody wants to see that animation of that weird fish character thing, or that one about the chef guy who makes food for a crabby old lady anyway. What the people, and really, what I want, is Wes.

Thank you.

TL;DR : I have condensed my thoughts into this video. Please consider checking it out, even if you have read my post, as I illustrate some finer details that I didn't have the time to write out.
