Airlock in steamy environment help!

Recommended Posts

Hi, how can I make an airlock in a very hot steamy environment?

I've used water locks previously, or petroleum in hot areas, learned that one the hard way! But I can't work out how to do this one.

I'm trying to make a hydrogen/wort cooling chamber for a steam turbine that sits in an area above a cool steam vent in a v steamy area beneath my base, it's only meant to be fairly temporary. Unfortunately I made the mistake of pumping superhot steam from a double volcano ex-ice biome wasteland that neighbours it, into the area already, so the steam isn't going to condense anytime soon. It's at around 190C. That was the aim of this really, to get rid of all that really hot steam (and send it into the hot water reservoir beneath) so I can make an attempt at taming those metal volcanoes. I can't run the turbine for any length of time to cool the steam, and although I have hydrogen ready to put in I can't create a lock to keep the steam out. A water lock will boil, a petrol lock will presumably create flooding chaos. Or does the water/steam stay on the top layer? Haven't tested that yet tbh. I have Visco gel, could that be the answer? I tried and it ended up everywhere, wondering if there's a way to apply it so the steam won't mess with it? Or an alternative? Here's a screenshot of the current mess. (The ex ice biome is above the volcanoes out of shot, and I don't need to run the plastic machines any more, got enough plastic.)

Thanks!

10g of crude with 10g of petro on top will work to about 400C. Or you can use between 2kg and 39kg of naptha with 300g of petro on top to seal above 500C and prevent off gassing as well. Of course a petro lock is sufficient.

There s a way to do it without much effort. Unfortunately I can not post any screenshot right now, business trip with iPad only. I will try to explain it.

Make a 2 tile entrance. Make a 2 tile entrance right next to that one tile higher or lower, like a little stairway. Now gases can slip through only The 2 adjacent open tiles. YOU CAN BLOCK THAT BY OCCUPYING ONE OF THOSE TILES WITH JUST A DROP OF LIQUID. A few grams of oil in one of the gas slip through tiles will block that path for gases completely while your dupes can just walk through.

I consider this using an exploit, but sometimes there just is no other way.

Ah sorry, I gave up and ran here a bit too quickly this time. A petrol lock would work as if the water condenses in the lock it would just flow out the entrance side and leave the petrol undisturbed underneath? I'm going to try it now, hopefully that's how it works. Thanks for the answers.
