Ice Doesn't Melt Quickly - It Should

Recommended Posts

Basically the title, I have noticed when digging in Ice Biomes (or whatever they are called) that when ice is moved into warm areas it heats up VERY SLOWLY. Like, ridiculously slowly. And large amounts of ice? Forget about it, it would rather turn a 5 block radius around it cold, which makes sense to a point, but then the ice doesn't melt or does at decimals at a time. Ice becomes pretty important later, and I understand why it shouldn't melt immediately, but the rate that it melts now is a bit irritating. For example, I printed some ice when I had the oppertunity. I watched it for about 10 cycles and noticed that the temperature has gone down only 2 degrees! I find it impossible to have ice melt into liquid at this current time unless the temperature is very high.

The reason for this is because it's in one huge chuck that changes temperature as a unit.  Parts of it don't slowly melt away, you have to wait for it to all melt at once, which means it needs to absorb enough energy to melt 20 metric tons of ice before any of it melts.

At the moment the work around is to have several storage containers set to a higher priority and a much smaller capacity.  Melting 200-400 kg of ice will take a lot less time due to the game's quirks.  I typically put down one big one nearby and several small ones that are periodically refilled from it every few cycles when the ice melts.

The amount of ice compared to how long it should take to melt kind of makes sense but when I had an ice chunk (emptied an entire storage container) next to a heater that had superheated air - I feel like it should have budged in a couple of day cycles. Maybe we should be able to throw it in the crusher and turn it into snow? I love the cold biomes, live (or not) and learn.

It`s kinda annoying that you wait 20 cycles for the ice to melt and suddenly you got like 10 tiles woth of water. Would be nice if it melted in parts. For now you can make multiple storage bins for 10kg each and it should melt much faster.

You know, you can make a belt loop and run those 20kg chunks in loop near heat source, that'll melt them really fast!

Not there yet? Build ice sculptures in your water tank!

Or just build storage containers and limit them to 100kg or so. Like build your storage normally and one with high priority but only 100kg, it will cost dupe time, but it will melt gradually.
