Controls question for new player

Recommended Posts

Hey all, just started in on the game on Steam on Windows 7 alongside a friend and really enjoying it so far.  However, despite looking through the options and so on, I'm not sure sure if the controls are working properly, or perhaps I just don't know how they are intended to work.

When I press the keys [1] - [10] on the keyboard, instead of selecting the tool or item in my inventory, it just examines / inspects it.  Is that intended, or should I actually equip/ pick up the axe when I hit the hotkey for it?  I can still equip tools by right-slicking them in the inventory, but it seems a bit awkward.

Also, I can't seem to map actions onto the extra buttons on my gaming mouse; are only the standard 3 mouse buttons supported by the game?

Select the mouse and keyboard and apply that. Then re-select and re-apply the gaming console. You may need to go into the control settings and manually select the buttons you wish your controller to do if it's not automaticly being recognized. if that fails, re-run your gamepad firmware and make sure it's up to date. Sometimes, you also need to sync the gamepad "saved buttons macro" for the game on its own proprietary software.

if all else fails, write up a Bug Tracker report.

Ah sorry, I wasn't super clear; I'm trying to use a keyboard + mouse that has extra thumb buttons, should I keep using the keyboard + mouse option or use the gamepad option?  When I try to remap actions on my mouse, it works for the right and left mouse button, but doesn't to recognize when I click the extra thumb buttons.

Extra thumb buttons may be supported with your peripherals' software/firmware, including assigning macros that way. DS only recognizes the generic setup of keyboards and gamepads, unless it was designed specifically with that model in mind.

it sounds like you will need to manually assign the force inspect key so it's not "always on." If that does not work, assign it to a new key or key combo. TECHNICALLY, it is POSSIBLE the "keyboard" remapping commands will recognize the "buttons" as key-commands, but likely this is why it's conflicting.

If your macro software that came with your KB to program games with it does not help, make a bug tracker with your keyboard specific make and model as well as the firmware version/BIOS of the keyboard. Klei may need to see if it's compatible or not.

OK, I reset my keybindings (had previously set left Ctrl as Split-stack modifier button in options, as it was listed as "Unknown / unassigned" by default) and now my hotkeys seem to function as expected.  I'm giving up on getting the mouse thumb-buttons recognized in-game though :p (probably possible using outside programs etc. but not really worth the bother, I can reach most everything I need on the keyboard as is.)

Extra mouse buttons are definitely supported. My partner has a gaming mouse with 12 thumb buttons and 7 more up top, and it's working just fine in DS.

Which model and mapping software are you using?

Well, it's a Logitech G400, but I try to think as little as possible about it so I usually avoid even the 1st party mapping software for making the mouse buttons simulate keyboard presses etc., so I usually jdon't bother setting anything up other than the automatic driver installations and then ust hope the game recognizes "Mouse4" and "Mouse5" buttons instead of setting up my mouse buttons to simulate keyboard presses "i" or "o" or whatever :p

Anyway, as mentioned now with the hotkeys working nicely this game is much smoother and I'm definitely content to keep on with the regular keyboard + mouse setup :D

Thanks all!

LOL, I think you just answered your own question. You gotta set them up ;)

Anyway, glad you found a workable solution in the meantime! Enjoy!

Oh haha, I meant set up the mouse mappings in the external mapping program, not set them up in Don't Starve   Right now when I go into the Setting page in Don't Starve, I can remap all my keyboard keys, and even the regular Left-Mouse-Button and Right-Mouse-Button, but when I try pushing any of the 'extra' buttons on my mouse, nothing happens, as if Don't Starve didn't recognize I pushed a button at all.

And yes, definitely enjoying!  Unlocked WIckerbottom and currently making it to day 50+!

Right, right, I mean I think that's part of the issue... you need to create a Don't Starve profile in Logitech Gaming Software, and map them in there.
