My game won't start anymore

Last night I wanted to check something on the previous update U50, so I let the game load U50 from betas, looked at what I needed to, reverted the betas to "none".

Today my game crashes on the main menu, not being able to find "legacy.bin" or something. All mods were deactivated. I even deleted the mods.json in case something was still left there. I tried verifying game files but it is still crashing. I can't load the previous update either. I'm not sure what happened...

Steps to Reproduce

Opening the game

User Feedback

So... If I understand it correctly, the game/steam for whatever reason, deleted ALL legacy.bin files for mods.. Is there a way to fix that so I can at least load the game even without mods? Would unsubscribing from all mods work?

Edit: It looks like "verifying integrity of files" deleted all legacy.bin files going from one version to the other.

Usually deleting mods.json fixes it. Have you tried restarting Steam?

We haven't been able to reproduce this issue when we investigated it before. Besides changing branches did you install or uninstall any mods? The mod referenced in the crash report hasn't been updated in a couple years so we can rule out a recent update.

Deleted mods.json, restarted steam, restarted computer, clear steam cache. Nothing fixed it

It's a different mod every time since ALL legacy.bin files for mods are missing Player.log

It happened to me before, steam uninstalling mods at random and not being able to reinstall it for several days/weeks but the game still loaded. Offended mods looked like that on game's properties/workshop:
image.png.56406ecf94e64d16be0e3b8083650835.png

That's a new mod I installed just so I find out what "legacy.bin" is and if it is actually created in the folder the crash points. The bin file was created and the folder did have that file for a while and then on a "verify integrity of game files" action, steam deleted it.

My last resort would be reinstalling the game but that doesn't mean that the issue won't happen again, right?

Exact same problem here.  Just reinstalled the game yesterday.  Had subscriptions to mods from previous playtime before the Feb update.  Unsubscribed to everything and the game loads, but cannot install any mods without the error.

I'm having this same issue.

I've recently reinstalled ONI on my Mac and if I add any mods, the game crashes as soon as it loads the main scree, saying it cannot find files with names that end with 'legacy.bin'. The names of the files have a string of numbers preceding that and are, of course, in different paths as they would be related to each mod.

One example:

FileNotFoundException: Could not find file "/Users/<removed>/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/workshop/content/457140/1937854017/1700654375995828756_legacy.bin"

If I remove all mods, the game starts just fine. But if I add any mods, it crashes. On my PC, where I never uninstalled the game, it runs fine, with the same mods.

Reinstalling the game after moving all ONI items from documents/Klei/OxygenNotIncluded folder to a different location, worked for me. The game managed to finally! download mods and load to main menu

Edit: log file after install in case that helps Player-prev.log

I was able to reproduce the issue by subscribing to Pedestal Filter. The issue appears to be the Steam client failing to download the mod. In the next update it won't crash and it will instead display a message saying the mod failed to download.

This won't help solve the issue of mods not being downloaded though, it's not clear why the Steam client isn't downloading them.

You could try deleting (make a backup first) C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\appworkshop_457140.acf

This worked for me as well.

Not working for me, Moving the ONI folder from the documents location, deleting all workshop folders for ONI and the appworkshop_457140.acf mentioned above allows the game to start, but as soon as a single workshop mod is added the game crashes on load again with the legacy.bin error since the mods are not downloaded from steam :(

This is one of my favorite games, but it's really annoying that it's not working almost a month later :(

I'm trying to start the game on a newly purchased computer. It will start on the old computer but not the new one. I'm getting this error every time I try to start the game with any mod subscribed. The only way to get the game to start on the new PC is to unsubscribe from all mods. The complaint is always about a missing *_legacy.bin file. These files don't exist anywhere, on the old computer or the new one.

I tried removing everything from the documents/Klei/OxygenNotIncluded folder but it did not seem to make a difference.

FileNotFoundException: Could not find file "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\457140\2086704949\2532793716701695142_legacy.bin"

Has there been any progress on why the steam client is not downloading mods?
