Knowledgeable Posted July 24, 2018 Share Posted July 24, 2018 Whenever in a server, whether mine or not, no matter what, my connection never rises above 2 bars and is usually 1. I always have at least a small lag meaning I am unable to kite anything in game. Sometimes the connection is so bad I cannot play on a server. I don't udnerstand what causes this. Is it due to me living in a country that is a bit far from the bigger ones? (Country is New Zealand) or is it my wifi/laptop? I would really like some kind of answer as I am at my wit's end with this... I'm not 100% certain as to the exact details of your connections, but I can give you some general advice as well as information that you can add which can help the community to determine your issue. 1st, wifi usually doesn't do well compared to wired connection especially on this game I believe. 2nd, most laptops aren't a great option for DST as well, but that should cause lag rather than ping related issue. 3rd, I've heard of somewhat well-known DST players who live in Australia claim that their internet is pretty bad and that they have trouble playing with anyone who isn't in Australia. Since New Zealand isn't that far off, perhaps that might contribute to the problem. As far any additional information you could provide that could help more connection/tech-savy people to determine your troubles, let us know what are the specs of your laptop that you feel comfortable sharing with us. Do you still get 1-2 bars when hosting your own server and playing it solo (online or offline doesn't matter)? Do you get 1-2 bars when joining dedicated servers (such as the official Klei hosted servers) or do you get 1-2 bars joining normal, temporary servers? Both perhaps? As far as other online games go I generally don't have as frequent connection issues as I do with DST, so I'm not entirely sure if it is all because of where I am globally. Yes, I do still get 1-2 bars hosting a world alone. The answer is both, dedicated and normal servers. I can't pull up the full specs right now but here are a few I sort of remember: AMD A6 Radeon graphics 2.8ghz Max CPU 8GB RAM Yeah, I know, it's pretty terrible. I do hope to get a proper PC someday when I have the funds. So, any more input on what to do? While I am no expert on computers, your system doesn't sound like it's the root cause of your connection problem to me nor should your geographic position be if you experience problems hosting solo. It seems more like something is going on with your wifi, bandwidth, or applications going on in the background while you're playing. Try checking this Klei support page out for trouble-shooting some issues and see if following any of those steps help you out. Klei Network and Performance Troubleshooting Guide Hopefully something helps to alleviate the issue somewhat. If anyone else who is more knowledgeable can offer any advice, it'd be greatly appreciated. Edit #1 I did a little research into the spec requirements for DST as well as reviews on the AMD A6, and I'm almost 100% sure that your laptop is good enough to run the game okay. My best guess would be upgrading to ethernet should fix the problem if trying all those tweaks doesn't help. Also, pay attention if any background applications or anyone else nearby is consuming bandwidth while you're trying to play DST. Some of the servers with the largest ping are 17000 upwards (one of which was a Klei server that I couldn't play on). Also unsure how my bandwidth is. I share my wifi with 2 other people who now and then do download stuff. As for background applications usually all I have going on besides DST is Steam and Chrome. Well, the problem with finding servers that have low ping for you is mostly related to your geographic location. However, what puzzles me is that you have connection issues even hosting solo. Hearing about you sharing wifi with 2 other people who may or may not download things definitely makes sense. I'm pretty sure the unreliability of wifi, in addition to sharing it with 2 others, is a big contributing factor to your ping headaches. Try playing when the other 2 aren't using the wifi as much if you can. As for finding servers with lower ping to play on, you can make a thread on the server bulletin on the forums and ask for people who live in or close to New Zealand to play with you. Knowledgeable Posted July 25, 2018 Author Share Posted July 25, 2018 Unfortunately there is nothing I can do about the 2 others using my wifi. All 3 of us are using it near constantly. Also I'm not too fussed about low ping stuff, and I'd like to be able to play with anyone anywhere as several of my Steam friends are in US or Europe. Ultimately all I really want is to have a good connection that is stable so I can play optimally and help others more in servers. It really sucks whenever a boss fight or big fight comes and my only real option is to tank because I can't kite. Now and then I also get hit extra times because of lag and this sometimes leads to me dying. Extant Posted July 25, 2018 Share Posted July 25, 2018 I see. My best advice is to try upgrading your ethernet and not your hardware in that case. Most likely that's the best solution to stabilizing your performance issues somewhat. Also, I wanted to add that this game does tend to be a bit finicky with connection for some reason. One of my acquaintances has a very good internet connection and set up their own dedicated server but sometimes we lag and our performance drops from 3 bars to 2. It makes sense that you can play other games fine but have problems with this one for some reason. I wish I could help us both. 1 last advice I can give is to try and turn off mods and see if that also helps. I know some mods definitely cause performance issues. Hmm, maybe Klei could provide an answer but they're too busy with stuff I guess. I can only hope the issues improve over time. Turning off mods doesn't change anything really. I've tried turning off all client and server, all client, all server etc. Doesn't change performance. I do what I can in my free time to check and see if there are any threads that I can offer assistance in. I have to give you props for your tenacity. I doubt I'd be able to continue playing the game if my performance was constantly hovering between 1-2 bars. Hopefully it gets better and may your future DST adventures be filled with science, magic, and fun! Yeah it is annoying at times, but usually the lag is minimal so a bit of disadvantage in combat is all I really get. It's only bad if I am lagging a lot in which case I just find another server. The higher it will be, The better. I am using a router, and a gaming Asus laptop, The game is working perfectly well enough for me.
