Mariilyn
So I've been playing a lot with ranches since last update and would like to share a suggestion that I really like. There is a real need for better egg management in this game. The absence of a simple way to automate egg management combined with the wide variety of critters and critters eggs make ranching really tedious and cumbersome. I have to regularly look after my ranches to see if I need to incubate new eggs and make sure I don't inadvertently eradicate my wild populations. Since we can't queue continuous recipes in the egg cracker, I have a bunch of them in my colony for different types of eggs (some of them set on continuous, others for temporary production). Half of them are for shine bugs. And I constantly mix them up since there is no quick way to tell which egg goes where. This is why I suggest to make the egg cracker (and possibly the incubator) work more like the power control station : - Integrate a small checkbox storage only for eggs inside the building. - All the eggs and only the eggs inside said storage will be cracked or incubated. No need to manually select recipes anymore! - Add "Sweep only" and "Tamed eggs only" options. Also : - Eggs that have lost all viability should begin to rot instead of generating a raw egg. - Add an automation device that send a signal when the population level of a stable get over or below a certain threshold (the critter drop-off already give the number of critters in a room). I believe that changes like this would greatly help to completely automate egg management. Behold, this fabulous vision of what the egg cracker could be! You're suggesting this even if the eggs have been stored in a <10C (<0C?) environment? It would slow their decay, like for other foodstuff. Viability for incubation and freshness are two different things (and apparently, putting RL eggs into a cold environment reduce their viability). In any case I think it's weird that we can produce food just by storing eggs in a compactor for 10 cycles. But I'm only making suggestions and open for other solutions. Ambaire
What about the egg merely becoming 'non-viable' and have a perish timer like regular unrefrigerated whatever? If it's cracked before the timer expires, ... Mariilyn
1 hour ago, Ambaire said: If it's cracked before the timer expires, ... I was thinking that viability timer and freshness timer would be separated and an egg would remain edible for a while longer even after becoming nonviable for incubation. If processed at an egg cracker, it would gives a raw egg + egg shells (and the raw egg has the freshness state of the previous whole egg). But if left for too long at room temperature, t would eventually become a rot pile + egg shells, (like regular food). And eggs could be stored again in the refrigerator. All things considered, its about the same as what we have now, since eggs inevitably become perishable raw eggs after 10 cycles. But it would make it so that the egg cracker is necessary for making omelettes. It does kinda defeat its purpose if we don't really need it and that eggs crack by themselves without any effort required.
