The same could also be achieved by using a door in a normal way and connecting it to your smart fridge, the door will lock stopping your dupes getting into the room, if you have two doors, one which locks by automation and the other being set to exit only then you also stop dupes getting stuck. :) 

That and a liquid shut off valve to stop water reaching them and you can use it on hydroponic tiles too.

Yes, but (example) for meal, it keeps growing with dirt and water in stock, with my system it save little bit more dirt and water :)

The dirt used should more or less be the same, it will continue using it and growing until it becomes stifled, your design stops the plants growing but the resources are already there
