I tested it just now, and they both increase their reproduction and drain calories while burrowed. This was tested with a tame, groomed, happy stone hatch. However, it does not appear as if they will be groomed or count towards the stable population... so yeah, it's not all that great. Perhaps with a change to how grooming and stable pop work, it would be nice. That being said, we still need a reliable way to place natural tiles.
