supplement early game oxygen production with *slime*

This is part of building towards mushroom production. I realized a few things:

(1) if you have a swamp positioned underneath your base somewhere, you can use gravity to delay the CO2 problem in your base and set up a mushroom farm at the same time.

(2) you're going to need a place to dump Pwater, this solves that problem very quickly. You just need to unlock decontamination tech early to get deodorizers.

(3) At the same time, the Polluted Oxygen drifts upwards through an array of deodorizers, at a very gradual rate.

(4) after you get the swamp full of CO2 and have all your slime stored underwater, you can begin pulling controlled amounts back into the open and allow it to gas. It's hard to get an exact amount but it seems like 8 moderate lumps of slime in compactors offsets about 1 deoxidizer. After the 8 open-air compactors are full set them all to sweep only, or your dupes will run around constantly to keep them full.

Dupes consume a small amount of slimelung but most of them won't dip below 100%. Very rarely have I had to restrict someone from going below, but make sure there's a pneumatic door they have to cross on the way down so you can if you need to. This is the third time I've tried this, and it solves or delays multiple problems at once. Very resource and time efficient.

And, there's surface slimelung all over my base. But that doesn't do much other than kill off surface food poisoning, right?

This method is great for maps that have very little algae in the start area! (like the one I'm on now)

If you let your farmer tend the crops, she WILL get sick...

 

The answer to that is to train a few dupes in Farmer *and* courier before turning on the farm station. That way they all spend more time above than below. Now I just have to figure out what to do about dupes idling down there... Install showers above, set to low priority?

 

Also any mouth breathers or biohazardous dupes you let in your colony, they too will get sick and there is nothing you can do. Just don't take those traits I guess. Mouth breather doesn't immediately seem like a problem but you have to realize that they breathe something like 3 times more, so they get 3 times more host germs too.

The bottom 2 layers of my base are always reserved for CO2 gathering and shroom farms (and lately for the bottom half of my drecko pens, top half being filled with H2).  I then put a carbon skimmer in the middle of the 3rd layer so the CO2 never rises past that point but stays put where I want it to be.
