nutcase23
I've been lurking in the forums for awhile but I would like to ask the valiant testers of the upcoming preview the following question. Mark 2 brings alot of new critters so it is quite obvious that ranching is going to be an important thing to manage now. However, one of the silent killers I have encountered in my playthroughs is manpower (of lack of), of which there is no obvious visible metric (short of paying very close attention). For example, I had a playthrough once where I was running out of food, but I had no limiting resource so I thought I just needed more plants. Turns out I just didn't have enough dupes filling the mealwood plots with dirt so they didn't grow.optimally. Adding more plants just made it worse and the whole colony died. So my question is, how many critters can your average rancher optimally manage without starting to fall behind? I understand that many factors play into this such as dupe skill level, involvement of other tasks, the extent of automation utilised. What I'm asking for is based on your experience so far in the update, how many ranchers do you feel is needed to manage X number of critters/stables. Added information on types of critters and level of automation would be great too. I personally prefer to play with a low number of dupes (been playing with 8-9 but can raise that to 12) so I like to pre-plan to a certain extent what my final job composition would be. Of course, cross training is a thing I do as well. Townkill
just doing ranching, i dont think a dupe can manage more than 2 full stables, 16 hatches total. Might be better if ranching could skill increase, but ive never seen it level Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/90096-rancher-work-speed-and-critter-number/#findComment-1028936 Share on other sites
onebit
I had 10 dups and had to add a 2nd rancher for 11. One hatch stable and 1 drecko stable kept him too busy, so he wouldn't wrangle. I had my ranchers pull double duty as farmers but I didn't have alot of plants to manage at the final stage. 13 hours ago, Townkill said: just doing ranching, i dont think a dupe can manage more than 2 full stables, 16 hatches total. Jigsawn
I've found a seasoned rancher with high stats can manage a little more than 16 critters, with a little free time left over, assuming the stables are placed reasonably close together. That's with supply dupes keeping feeders topped up too. With all the new critters I think you'll need more dedicated ranchers if you want to get the most out of them. But right now it's unclear whether the returns from critters are saving much dupe time overall. I guess I'd compare Ranching to Farming right now, where you need a couple of guys on it full time, but hopefully with a nice boost to your colony's well-being. The question is whether the output is worth the resources needed to keep your Ranchers alive. Oozinator
I really like those new critters and played around with them a bit for foodproduction. I have two ranchers and after i got some stone hatches i kill all normal hatches and try to get smooth ones. I don't know for what i need those, because when i go for meat/food i can harvest lowest tier hatches. I don't like the additional feeder micro.. I like the scary sound, when i load a game and critters are born..
