Idea for end game

Recommended Posts

Its very likely that Klei already has a plan for end game, or maybe something similar has already been mentioned, but ill toss my 2c anyway.

Dupes come into existence through a printer, or gate. There are several ruins spread out through the asteroid, some have zappers, some have food, lockers, some have desks with computers. In those computers, there are snippets of information that make no sense without a context, but they do when all the pieces come together. Its the blueprint for an interdimensional gate, researched by whoever was there before. However, the level of technology necessary to build such gate is out of reach for our struggling dupes, but they can use that knowledge to modify the printer for the same effect.

Research what needs to be researched, gather a bunch of stuff, modify the printer and get out.

... just to reappear in yet another asteroid. With all knowledge erased from memory, so they have to do it all over again... until, eventually, they reach a place where the struggle is over, and they can live happily ever after.

Research would have to be done individually to unlock high security doors leading to those data banks, since each would have a unique locking mechanism. This would be an incentive to keep the computers up, as current research tree is too simplistic, easy and quick to go through.

It would encourage new players to not turtle and die horribly, instead, explore, which is something that experienced players already do by default. And maybe also die horribly, but thats a story for another day.

I like this theory-crafting, but your theory sounds strangely close to the endgame and plot of Don't Starve, which requires exploration, gathering specific parts, some infrastructure and preparation, research, and survival.

It would also be nice to not turn ONI into a clone of Factorio, which has ridiculous amounts of research, infrastructure, and base optimization to build up to a single victory condition, building a rocket.

I honestly love ONI more for its sandbox style of gameplay, more than any kind of plot devices or escape. I do realize that it is in pre-release state, but base-building and survival aspects mixed together are the main draw of ONI for me. That and the cute animations of everything.

This game just need a Story-mode and a Free build mode. I don't like sandboxes games, but I like ONI for his own survival/base building stuff. I wish the endgame content will be great as many people wich it will be.

Another idea would be to add an Experience level meter for the player each time you restart a base, because the funniest part (in my opinion) is to decover another seed, and build again differently...

It would be funny if the dupes invert the portal, go through it, and three of them pop out on the other side with a new seed. It would explain where the dupes came from.

Yes, but that's the excuse for sandboxes mode, for the story we have to have an end ( for the good of society, all Dupes from the colony were sent to tests and the results will apply to people who have remained alive in the real world ... or something like that ) or at least a conclusion.
