This can work, but i think it can be hard to make it (as a developer i mean) for each spider you have least health, i think its pretty hard, i might get wrong, don't know a lot about that stuff. But as I said if you get an army, you are invincible.

They did it with the meat effigy so why not the spiders and atack power,seems logicalI mean the default character damage(Exception Wolfgang)is 10(if you puch) and if you upgrade to an axe you do around 70 damage,spear 100,tentacle spike 150So i don't think it's impossible to make a debuff centered around how many followers you haveAnd if you ask me another sugestion,for the spider army would be that your weakness is graduated by the number of spider and the typeFor example:A normal spider costs let's say :10 or 5 hitpointsA spider warrior costs : 20 or 15This will give you some micro managing to do and a second thought when you decide what kind of spider's you will bring

Ye you are right, if you take too many spiders you will end up with 1 hp, that means you will be 1 hit to everything.
