Research that requires materials

Recommended Posts

Right now, research takes time, but doesn't take anything you really need to explore relevantly for. As a result, games always start with "create simple self-sustaining base for 3 dupes, then research absolutely everything, then start building stuff".

If some higher tier research required... slime, ice, wheat, plastic, liquid oxygen, rock gas, or other exotic materials, there would be a need to use the technology you have in order to explore for the materials to perform the research.

I agree, it would definitely add to the game play to give pressure to explore and expand early.

You'd have to make more meaningful decisions to push into certain biomes early and risk disease or hypothermia/severe burns depending on which research goal you valued more.

Yeah, I agree research is too easy.  Rather than having the existing buildings pointlessly consuming resources though, I think it would be better if there were more research buildings to construct.  Maybe like a "Polymer Lab" that requires a bunch of plastic to build, and unlocks additional things you can build with plastic.  Or a "Metallurgy Lab" for refined metals.

Low tier research requires like 200 kgs of dirt

OP said " doesn't take anything you really need to explore relevantly for. " He meant to say that regardless of what tech you're researching, only dirt and water are required, which is weird. For instance, you can build a base and research oil and natural gases refinery/generator while your dupes have never seen a single gram of oil/natural gas.
OP suggested that It would make more sense and make the game harder/more fun to also require something related to the tech (e.g. 10 kgs of crude oil to research crude oil refinery).
