n00biwan
(edit - playing preview branch btw) So, coal generators now not being the bane of my existence (THANK YOU!!!!), I'm looking at my base, thinking, this might actually be sustainable enough to just go on and on... it's messy but it works, mostly. One problem I see ahead though is lack of sand, I'm not digging out everything yet, just trying to make a working base that doesn't require constant mining to feed. So, came up with two ideas to remedy that: First thought I had was, what if planters produced some kind of organic filtration medium when they are replanted? Like the nutritionally barren fibre you get in a growbag at the end of growing.... it could supply a slow but steady filtration medium income based on how much they grow/eat. Second, a machine, that, you like... feed stone... into? Some kind of grinder/pulveriser? The different stone types could be differently difficult to process (make the machine produce more heat when grinding obsidian etc?) Maybe you'd need to feed it water... I don't know. Either way, I don't know why this wasn't the first idea I had.
Executive_Lurker
Yes there should be a way to refine stone/sandstone into sand and your plant fiber idea is fuggin genius. I hope the team sees this.
Executive_Lurker
Also I have no idea if this is scientifically viable whatsoever but maybe the co2 scrubbers could give you carbon which could then be used as a filtration medium... dunno
PickPay
Or just cook Dirt to make Sand

CO2 is very low energy state of carbon and oxygen so it's better to leave it up to plants and photosynthesis to produce some carbon-rich materials that can be then easily converted to carbon. Piisfun
how about a pulverizer to convert sandstone to sand? combine this with some sort of kiln for roasting the clay waste from the filters, you could also pulverize brick. This does allow an infinite loop, but seeing as it is intended for really old colonies, I don't see that as a problem.
