PsychoSterope
With the new preview update, I can't run the generator without it going into immediate breakage from overheating. I tried to move it into the ice area with two Wheezeworts under it, but alas my dupes are spending 90% of their time and all of my copper doing repairs to it.. Am I missing something? Lothalin
I was having the same issue with my supercomputer even placing it in the cold biome it was getting so hot it was damaging itself. PsychoSterope
I have found that ice is melting on it and it cools down for a bit and then reheats. I have attached the latest save file, which is about 20 cycles since my original post. (I think) The Starving Planet Cycle 39.sav Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/76138-coal-generator-problem/#findComment-884368 Share on other sites
rottielover
I put my coal gen on a platform above my waste water sump and I put the liquid vent (drain) so that it drips onto the platform (not directly on the gen). The waste water runs off both side of the platform and keeps my coal gen about 50ish C right now. It's a thought EDIT - I should have noted that tile is important. I did two mesh, three solid, two mesh. The coal gen's sit on two mesh and one solid each, while a storage box occupies the middle solid tile, and there is a liquid vent above the storage box. The output / drain from my CO2 Scrubber drips onto the storage box which is set to polluted ice, etc. The water drips onto the box and some of the ice melts, at the same time the water drips over the coal gens and cools them. Requires what I call a sump room. Basically it's a big holding tank with a couple of levels in it. The very bottom is meant for liquid grey water. Above that the scrubbers go and above that the coal gens and fancy piping. enhander23
I managed to fix the problem by putting two hydro fans in the same room as the generator. My room right now is generator-fan-gaspump-fan-generator. However, now I have a problem with wire overloads =.= Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/76138-coal-generator-problem/#findComment-884482 Share on other sites
vonVile
Check to see if the room is full of hot CO2. If so, I suggest putting an Algae Terrarium by the equipment to get rid of the CO2 and hopefully lower the room temperature. ThrowingTracks
Had the same problem with the Coal generator, constantly breaking. I had it built at the bottom of my base right next to the Ice. Room was insulated at the top but open on the right side into the ice field. In the same game I also had a Water purifier that would break as soon as it was built. Scrapped that particular game as, erm, nothing would work. Don't have the save game, sorry :/ Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/76138-coal-generator-problem/#findComment-884607 Share on other sites
Pillowseller
Same here. Coal Generator overheats itself and is unusable. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/76138-coal-generator-problem/#findComment-884668 Share on other sites
rottielover
ok this time I'll try screenshots... Here is my active cooling system for my coal gen's The storage box in the middle holds contaminated ice (I accidentally had some normal ice in there hence the clean water in there). Hope this helps you get yours working for the moment. Vilda
I tried using hydrofan to cool it down and result was amazing - a different thermal extreme on each side. On right, the generator kept exploding, but on left the CO2 actually turned to solid. PsychoSterope
This is my current setup and it seems to keep it from breaking 90% of the time now. rottielover
update, I've since tried the same thing and apparently the material you make the storage box out of matters... When I made it with limestone, work's great, but when made from granite, it didn't work. I can only assume (hope?) that different materials actually have different thermal conductive properties! With that in mind the way I think this is working is that the ice melting gives cold water running over the generators cooling them to operating temperature. Anyway, on the clean water side I added another coal gen (I have a hatch farm on the bottom left to provide the coal), and another box with clean ice. I had to add the water heater to get the water plants to grow after the ice melt Now if I can just figure out how to provide a good environment to my growing boxes ....
