It's a bug. Other than the airlock and pump/vent loop exploit, there is one more bug that does the same exact thing (reducing air), but is seldom mentioned. If anyone has noticed, whenever you build something, the amount of air (whichever substance) in the vicinity disappears. I observed this when I was creating a permanent airlock for my mealwood, the amount of oxygen drastically reduced when I sealed them, and if you build the structure over and over, the air would actually be gone. The same thing happens to liquids. I was adjusting my waterlock to change the tiles into insulated tiles with water already inside the waterlock entrance. After I replaced the original tiles, the water actually disappeared, the loss of volume was so significant, my waterlock broke. (Lesson learned: waterlocks should not be tampered once in place) Also, if you build a tile in your water tank, or in your natural water reservoir, whatever liquid is being replaced by a tile actually disappears. It's hard to observe how much disappeared, though according to my observation with a 1x3 water tank with 1000g of water per tile square, after replacing all the tiles beneath and next to the water, the water is nearly gone. Btw, I want to ask Spoonsonmyelbow about the 4-tank clean water setup, how much clean water can you end up once you used up the first tank of cont. water? Also how long does it take to reduce your 1-tank of cont. water completely? For the 3rd tank, doesn't the steam get lost in the loop little by little, and barely steam is turned into water? Lastly, what is the temperature of the water in the 4th tank? The reason I asked this is because I found that any water created using steam method is too hot to use directly for the hydrolyzer to create oxygen, which would indirectly kill my plants (that is unless I use insulated seal to prevent temperature fluctuation). My solution is to run the hydrolyzer oxygen through thermo-regulator before pumping into the room, but is there any other way to do it? Saturnus
The current best solution is to make a super-condenser where you combine distilling water for about half your oxygen needs and the other half by liquefying P-O2 into clean oxygen. You use the super cold oxygen to dramatically increase the efficiency of the steam condenser and at the same time ensure that the output is reasonably temperate. However, by tomorrows update, a lot of the work we have done optimizing these set ups may be invalidated. And since it appears we cannot actually use any saved game files with the new update it wouldn't make too much sense to put too much effort into testing it right now.
