A question about caves/ruins

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow forumers!I'd like to ask your help once again in a serious matter. Is there any way one can play with caves without the added latency?I've read multiple times when you add caves there are two shards created in the game which inherently adds a delay because of connection issues which cannot be "fixed".

Is there any way one could create a world where the caves and the ruins are working like in don't starve where you play in one "shard" or server instance or whatever it is called?

Is there any other trick to make the game not add this ~0.5 second delay and work as well as non-caves worlds work?

I would not mind using dedicated server tools if that would mean fixing the issue.I really enjoy DST more than I do DS,but playing without caves is missing half the content.

Thanks a lot in advance.I know this is a difficult subject.

The best tips I can give is to increase the tickrate. The max value is 60 and the default is 30. This is how often the server updates everything that is going on in the game. Not sure what you mean by "trick the game". The surface world and the caves are running as two separate instances, that need to communicate with each other, and with that comes a delay (like you wrote).

The tickrate does nothing unfortunately. The tickrate seems to fix things up a little, especially when deactivating prediction. My maxwell is vibrating a lot though.. Anyway is there any way to merge those worlds into one?

Edit: Let me rephrease that. Can I remove part of the delay by hosting a dedicated server and changing the default tickrate? Is it any different from changing the set launch options with tickrate 60?

Both creating a game (overworld + caves) normally and running it as a dedicated server would spawn two instances, I think. It seems to be the way DST was created. This is only my assumption, however, and it comes from what I have seen and read about setting up servers. Are you trying to set up a server remotely or are you trying it out on a local network? An additional ~ 0.5 s delay when adding a cave server sounds bit much, if the server has decent specifications. If the specifications fall below the requirements it is no wonder, though. The game even warns you if your computer is 'up for it' when you are trying to host a game with an overworld + caves.

Of course you can try to set it up as a dedicated server, but I think it will be identical to hosting a game normally (once the settings have been adjusted). Naturally, running a dedicated server might yield additional performance gains, which might help in decreasing delay. There are a few factors to consider.

The specs are no problem.I want to host a game the easy way.The game runs pretty smoothly without caves and with caves as well, barely any lag at all. However, the delay is always there and as you said it's the way the game is created.

Hosting a game normally will be your best bet if you are looking for an easy setup. I looked online for any additional options that would be exclusive for dedicated servers, but it appears they are essentially identical to the normal ones when it comes to configuration. There are always chances that performance can be improved by tweaking the system outside of DST, although most things should be pretty optimized out of the box.
