Lag and Saboteur Players

Recommended Posts

So, my first don't starve together, one of us on a laptop (host, i7, 8gb) and the other on a desktop (me).

I was lagging so bad that I died whenever something attacked me, we got to day 17 and a guy who came in earlier burned everything down, so we left.

When you host, are you the server?    Can you host games on Klei servers?   My connection speed was 114ms.

Thanks, appreciate any information I can get.

Host had minimap.   I also modified my client.ini file to set tick rate to 60, maybe this will help.

Yes. But it is possible to setup a dedicated server.

Nope. Although I'm sure you could find a 3rd party hosting service. I'd imagine DST would be popular enough for some server hosts to pop up somewhere.

You mean the minimap mod? I've heard that can put a bit of extra stress on the host. If you're using this as a host I'd recommend lowering the update throttling quite a bit. Although if you have a good computer and a solid internet connection then lowering it isn't really needed.

Thanks for the comments.

I don't have the money to set up a dedicated server but when I buy a more powerful computer in a few months I could use that.   I'm new to this but I would imagine it would help to:

1.  Keep all browsers and software closed.

2.  Turn off all updating services.

I'll do some research on this.

Welcome to the forums!

Honestly, you want a good processor and much RAM to host. Go for at least 16. My two hosting stations have 16 and 32, it works fine. And I typically enable 22 slots on two-sharded servers.

The minimap mod has much fame in lagging. Try disabling it. And report back with your findings! If that doesn't work, we'll have to try again :).

Quad core I7, 16gb ram, 4Ghz should do it then.   Not sure whta "two-sharded servers" or the reference to 22 slots means but I'll google it.

I thought I had solved the lag problem but it happens to me in almost every game even the 32ms ones.   No point in playing if you die lagging after every attack.

A two-sharded server has both the overworld and the caves on. By default DST has 1-6 player slots. If your machine can take it, it's possible to go beyond that through a small code change in the LUA.

Have you already reported your lag in the bug tracker? Maybe the devs can help you.
