Improve Storage Containers

Recommended Posts

Summary
Just having a chest, ice box, and a scaled chest is boring. We should have different types of containers with varying amounts of slots. Each should have benefits and disadvantages. Just to add some more difficulty, make the catcoon more annoying. Here are the containers I believe should be added, changed, and a new catcoon change. The purpose of this suggestion is to allow for better organization, allow for more customization, and requiring more preparation of certain storage.

Structures

Basket:

Slots: 4
Crafted: 6 Grass
Special: Unsealed

(Rework) Chest:

Slots: 6
Crafted: 2 Boards, 1 Gold
Special: Locked

Barrel:

Slots: 9
Crafted: 3 Boards, 2 Rope
Special: None

(Same) Ice Box:

Slots: 9
Crafted: 1 Board, 1 Gears, 2 Gold
Special: Cooler

Crate:

Slots: 12
Crafted: 8 Boards
Special: None

(Same) Scaled Chest:

Slots: 12
Crafted: 1 scale, 4 planks, 10 gold
Special: Locked, Fireproof

Legend

Unsealed - All mobs nearby can eat the food inside it.
Cooler - Reduces spoilage of items which spoil.
Locked - Only the creator can use this container and no one else. Destroying or setting on a locked container does not yield the items it stores.
Fireproof - Immune to fire.

Tools

Lockpick:

Crafted: 3 Gold
Durability: 2 Use

The lockpick will open up locked containers that are not yours and will take 10 seconds to open. Once the container is stop being used, it will go back to being locked again.

Mobs

Catcoon: Will now occasionally stalk players and will be attracted to containers which aren't locked. The catcoon will knock out items in containers which are not locked. Catcoons go back home at dusk.
Splumonkey: Will not knock out items in locked containers.

Why?  What benefit would this actually add to the game overall?  I don't really see making things locked as a benefit to PvE for the most part and really only a benefit in PvP.  However, in PvP you could just either burn or hammer the chest instead and essentially remove the purpose of these mechanics.  Making locked chests immune to both fire AND hammering just reduces the appeal of PvP as stealing is no longer really a viable option once someone is set up.

In general, I can generally see these ideas being more annoying, rather than improving gameplay.

That said, I do think it would be interesting to have a basket that creatures could eat from on their own.  I can see multiple uses for such a storage option specifically.  Of course, when it comes to domestication, you could even allow domesticated animals to eat from it.  However, in such instance, I would have it not raise obedience (instead only satiate hunger and raise domestication).

Yeah why do we need this or why you want this specifcly cause I don't get it except for maybe the basket and I could maybe put flowers into it but I don't know why I would you a barrel or a crate they do nothing if I build two chests I get some slots and their locked that doesn't seem need I would also point out that barrels are made by contracted metal bands so yeah.

It's to allow for more organization, customization of storage, and storage preparation. This was a real rough draft of balances, so I'll change it overtime. Locked storage will only be available to the owner of the structure. Think of it as your own personal container for your own rare items. You friends will not be able to go in out of these, so they wont be something you'd build all over your base. The others without locks are what everyone can get into, but have a disadvantage, people can take stuff from it and so can catcoons, so make sure you're not stalked by one. However, you can counter this by building walls and a gate. I'll update the recipes to make them better though and I know about the barrel, just thought rope would be fun instead of a metal like gold, for example. I'll change some recipes.

I still feel locked storage is rather pointless given the reasoning I described above.  Therefore, the only storage item you've presented that would be reasonable to implement in the current game would be the basket.
